I do think Mariah's breath control and technique has always been a little shaky. And by '97 her voice was in a really weird place. It always seemed like she struggled a LOT! Her live performances have been mostly lackluster since the mid 90's. And a lot of Mariah's live belts don't seem supported and lack resonance. It would sound like she's yelling.
Their voices are so different. But I've seen vocal experts argue EXACTLY what you're saying in here.

Overall, yea. Alot of singers are limited in terms of versatility. I think there are singers that excel in their own genres but I feel like beyonce's can transform into whatever she needs it to. Fantasia, Jazmine, JDUD are good for what they're good for but lack versatility. I honestly think beyonce can sing anything

None of the fantasias and jazmines have her IMPECCABLE technique. Singing is ALOT of shit and no one has it in spades like she does currently. NO ONE! I think someone being able to use their voice in any way they want is part of being the best. Even keke and ledisi are limited IMO. They can't do all the things that beyonce can do. I remember being so amazed at how beyonce was so clean even when she did her DC signature fast singing shit. Nothing was mumbled or falling over each other. She's amazing tbh
Vocally, beyonce is very textbook imo. Like, I can't pick out the thing that stands out most for her voice. She has a good register, her intonation is very consistent, great stamina, and a solid belting range. She kinda does everything 'really good', a jack of all trades in a way. Of course if you separate individual aspects, there are folks who are better but her collective skillset kinda gives her an edge.

I think brandy is VERY skilled and there are only a few things that separate them. Brandy corrected alot of things as she grew as a vocalist. She didn't use to sing with alot of support but she's much better with that. Beyonce's voice is always very strong and solid. Brandy waivers with that a bit. Like one thing she does now that irritates my soul is all that mic moving and flailing. Look, support the note and hold the fckn mic to ur mouth. Don't wave it around, pulling it away from her mouth and shit. I love Brandy's voice but she could tweak a few things. When I heard begging and pleading I honestly didn't think there was anyway we'd get that live. I honestly believe it's just a mixture of so many things! We'd probably never really know for sure. The ability is there, but I do think a big part of it is just confidence. It's funny how she would just go in and always go for it when she wanted to be respected and show off her talent. She was damn near an over-singer!
Now, I think there's a pressure there to just be perfect, because everyone's expectation of her is so next-level. Every time she performs, people are expecting the Sun & the Moon to move.
She also doesn't record music as ad-lib heavy as DIL era either or as vocally challenging as the B'Day stuff anymore beyond a couple tracks. So, that also plays a part.
