!!!!!!! To both of these comments omg

I enjoyed it back then but i REALLY do now. It's such a unique song, down to the sample choice. She and Kanye were really deep in their birkin bags

This is my go-to song when I just want to hear Brandy's voice and I don't want to overthink what song to play. It represents her artistry so well.

What song does it sample?

I really love this song. I like to hear her hit every note. I remember when it dropped on her website I expected it to be a lot bigger than what it was in terms of charts.

I still need Brandy to officially drop the single/video version with the extra strings in the intro and throughout the song

I really really love this song! I love the beat and the adlibs.

I can imagine it was a bit of a struggle to sing live because there are so many layers (maybe one of the reasons that Bran didn't like it as much)z

I remember feeling like this video gave BUDGET back in 04... this video & song alone had me ready af for the Afro era... Dave Meyers>>>>>
!!!!!!!!!!!! And then everything about WIS2U was so fucking CHEAP to me. Kanye should've done the whole album. I'm still pissed.

LOL whoa! I love WIS2U now but they should've just let Dave Meyers direct all her videos that era to keep the same quality/aesthetic... but they honestly should've went straight to "I Tried" as the 2nd single or "WYWB" to finish the Ye sound to then go the Timbo route for the remaining singles

You can tell Atlantic ain't know wtf to do with Brandy/that album, I'm sure it was a hot ass mess internally especially since Bran/Timbo we're pissed about the marketing direction lol

WIS2U grew on me in current day. But the only Tim mess I genuinely used was the mess that didn't even make the album. :dead:

Nodding Off should've been the first single. I feel like the album should've been the reverse: Tim get 1 or 2 tracks, Kanye produce the majority. Kanye's mess was so cohesive... and QUALITY.

:overit:

Yea.!!! All this!!!! Soo much went wrong with that era. And I still believe "how I feel " would have been a sleeper hit on urban/urban ac.

Atlantic stopped trusting Brandy and her team when they were the ones that helped Atlantic put food on the fuckin table

Make it make sense. Imagine if she didn't fight for Full Moon to be a single. Girl

There was a changing of the guard at Atlantic around this time. A lot of people that was there who understood Brandy were gone or had been promoted. Their urban division had shifted focus towards hip hop acts. One of the A&Rs had prior history with Kanye; so that's actually how he got on her album. And tbh he was brought on in the final hour. The same goes for t.I. Being on the album it was all about him getting a come up and helping expose him to female listeners. He had other features with female acts that year as well. Brandy was collateral damage imo. They just didn't give a damn.

Come on how do you lose a track that was already getting video treatments? That screams sabotage!!!

MESS

I will never understand that. I wonder if Benny Medina ended up giving away a couple of those bears to J.Lo or some mess. Just seems very strange :dead: everything about that era. Idk its very interesting how he was killing it with J Lo in "03" and Mariah the very next year. But he practically failed at everything regarding Brandy. it makes perfect sense why Brandy choose him to take her to next phase, I'm just lost why it didn't work out. He did alright in the beginning, promotion wise.  Yea that's true;  tbh I wouldn't have left Atlantic I would have rode that album out. And asked to be the hook girl until I had an album ready! I have faith she will work with Tim again.

the radio interview during the TwoEleven interview sticks out in my mind. It was the one time she was super honest about why she didn't use

Talked about all the plans she and Timbaland had, musically and visually and how everything changed at the last minute. I think it put a sour taste in her mouth. RHD and other songs are a lot higher and these days, she even ups the key on songs that were originally lower, which is pretty amazing after all this time. I'd love more of that and that setlist absolutely needs to get a lot longer and diversified when she returns to the stage, whenever that may be.

No excuse. Her catalog is too legendary to do them same 10 songs. Ch

Afro has so many amazing songs and I am glad we got different styles and am still happy they didn't make Turn it up the official single. I used to like it back then but it didn't age well.

The kanye productions are really good but I get why she was blindsighted

Thank God Brandy is gifted enough to give us a classic album in spite of chaos and confusion taking place :kii: she's just >>>>>>>
Well I hope she actually talks about it one day or make it make some sort of sense cause its always "I didn't believe in myself or the music" but we never hear no backstory or in depth experiences. I know with the change at Atlantic, decline in record sales/marriage controversy, her look in general...she had to be lashed in those meetings.
:plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop:
I needs the tea. I thought she was gonna lash tf outta Bussy Breyon and the music industry on B7 but I see a bitch gotta wait on the tea.

I appreciate that song so much more now than I did in 2004. Some of her best adlibs ever
!!!!

she was actually singin her ass off

TAOL was understood by many across the globe and charted Top 20 there. But it was FAR ahead of its time. It is a DEEP soul cut. Thats why its aged so damn well.

Brandy said RHD was too high not taol.. she just didn't like how she had been styled, the dancing and lipped when performing. She felt like she had been beyonce'd up and couldn't compete/pull it off, and wasn't comfortable in her choreography skills enough when doing that era.

Sad how one guy, Kyambo (sp?) ruined the entire era basically. He was the main factor. People were way too hard on Benny. He did a sensational job. Brandy was sabotaged from within her new Atlantic team, purely to propel Kanye. She said they literally stormed in, turned the project upside down at the last minute and she was left stunned confused and had no way to claw back any direction.

Sad. That era was one of her best, she got so deep in HER musicality and control.. if only she had stuck with Timb after, had everything else not happened in her personal life, she would be gone on to have the Justin/Nelly era with Timb. He cites her for reawakening his creative juices. She would have created magic with him. Afro was just the starter.

So sad.

Anyway TAOL was INSTANT for me, the second I heard it. Still kills me to this day, what a song.

That alone makes me SOOOOO sad, when you think of the MILLIONS of dollars she'd made that label beforehand. Unbelievable how nasty that industry can be and ultimately is. Thank God she's still so young - and even younger at heart - with a renewed sense of self and her own creativity. What's meant to be going forward will be, but, i am very sad for that version of herself that had to endure that during that time. Wow.

This song was part of such a big moment in my life. I just remember being 18, moving out of my parents house and working.  I would listen to this daily on VH1 soul, and it was just freedom to me. It was a good era of music during this time. I would watch TAOL, Confessions, You Shoulda Known Better, and Goodies daily.

I always liked Brandy but this song and album made me a stan.

I def became a stan during this era... I was invested in Brandy finally tapping into her "artist" side... from firing her mom as a manager, leaving Rodney for Timbaland, Kanye lead single, I was kinda sold!

Her creative & marketing teams just couldn't keep up the momentum... I remember first listening to the album in my Sony CD player LOL and just being wow'd w/ the content and her growth...

I was indifferent to the album when it first came out. From my first listen I was wowed with maybe two songs.  The press kept hyping up her working with Tim; it was all lackluster to me. I found some of the beats to be weird, and couldn't compete with his past work. I felt it lacked uptempos and radio records and Songs like "Focus" went on way too long imo. It has grown on me but I still believe it could have been better.

As for the marketing, Benny did his thang. She was everywhere and was seen; everyone knew she had a cd coming out. The way he had her over every black magazine was dope to me. Every week she was on somebody's tv show, and airing on the 3 music channels constantly with (hosting 106 & park, making the videos etc)  I was very impressed with this push!

Full Moon is actually what did it for me more than Afrodisiac. I was loving Afrodisiac, but my friends in high school were like %u201Cyea, Full Moon is still better%u201D
I had bought  Full Moon on my 13th birthday and I played the singles mainly and I Thought but everything else was too weird for my young ears. But in 2004 when I replayed When You Touch Me I was floored. Then Apart, All In Me :uhh: I was hooky

Apart is that girllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

She slid over that beat makes no sense whatsoever.

Apart was when I finally heard how much Brandy drop kicks Monica vocally and melodically. To think I used to think Monica was the better vocalist makes me wanna puke.

Its not for kids and I will cut you some slack because of our age difference BUT FM could have TAUGHT you this. But you were of age during Afro so.

I recall going to borders books, and listening to the album at one of those stations. I didn't like it at all, and in fact didn't buy it. It was like what is this??

I listened again, purchased it, and fell in love. My favorite album to date

I was so young and thought it was cute but not the best single at the time but TAOL is an amazing song. It's so grand/epic-sounding. Legendary even. I feel like it embodies Ghan today, would love for her to revisit that sound/vibe.

What's baffling about it? Music is subjective; not every listener will react the same to a song. That's life, it makes the world go around.

I find it interesting that a lot you became fans and/or Stan's during this era. Living in this time was very odd for me, everyone around kinda stopped fucking with brandy because of this album. I was stanning by myself lol.

It's funny because she gained a whole new international fan base because of this album

She loses some and gains some every era. :kii:
That's very much true. She stopped being for everyone and became a either you love her or you don't type of artist.

Brandy's weight bothered me in TAOL in that pink dress with her chest before they made the edit. I would say she was overall covered appropriately in both videos tho.

Yea i don't watch that video much. U can tell Atlantic was on some funny shit by the time that video was shot  :uhh: even if many people like it, they weren't pumping the same amount of coin into her project and that was obvious.  How dare they do their money making Queen like that?

It's wild how labels will punish you for decisions they make  :dead:  did she tell them to come in and switch everything up that she and Timbaland had set up? No.  Mess
