Post by: PRESSED on April 17, 2022, 12:22:51 AM

You're Brazilian too?
I have never witnessed anything like this before.

Nothing much. I was casually perusing through the board and discovered the information in your signature. What's that about?

Now wait, I distinctly remember some Blue Ridge Mountain Indian roots, Melungeon roots, Creole roots, Ethiopian roots and a host of other stuff.

How were you able to find your Brazilian lineage connection?

It's so specific.

her genetic profile. lol her DNA

it literally says Brazil and it even gives the area (Santa Catarina).

its pretty accurate cuz it also lists North Carolina and thats exactly where's she was from before heading to NYC in her latter teens.

i never had actual DNA results that said "Creole" or "Melungeon" "Ethiopian" - a lot of those were guesses of my own based on evidence I gathered from other sides of my family.

but this is her DNA literally listing where her roots lie. not a guess.

My thing is - why do you feel so proud of that?
Especially being so black presenting and having 95% of your roots being directly from Africa.

I understand deep diving into your roots but this seems like it's something like a badge or something for you.

yes my grandmother is still alive. sdsdsd
she raised me. just went to see pretty lady two weeks ago.

and u do know there were/are BLACK people in Brazil right?
most of the african slaves were actually shipped there.
its the CULTURE that's really fucking amazing and something to proud of.

and i actually have a BIG connection to afro-latinos that i know.
so this just all makes sense to me to find this out. and it's a win for my grandmother as well cuz she didn't know a lot about her family roots and wanted to know.

i constantly talk on here about not erasing afro-latinos...and not just thinking of J-Los and Ricky Martins when we think "latino"
i always talk about black people who i know who look just me , and just speak spanish.
dont worry sis...i know im black.

if i went home and told my grandmother some mess like "granny ur not black" she'd be like  :uhh: u ok?

she knows shes still that black woman from north carolina who cooks those soul food dinners i love so much
just like i know and cherish and represent my roots in southside queens
while embracing info about my roots. and having FUN with it.

but at least i know why i love afro-latinos so much now. cuz i was beginning to worry a bit...like why am i ALWAYS sticking up for them and defending them?
almost as quickly and strongly as i am to defend african-american people. :uhh: :uhh: like POPPIN up fuming and ready to go tooth and nail. and im so close to them as a community. they always have felt like family to me.

but its cuz i was raised by a woman with afro-latina roots. a woman who i am MADLY in love with.
it makes a lot of sense.

keyword being AFRO. as in, we're still Black at the foundation of everything. and we don't run away from or try to hide that.
as in, Zumbi dos Palmares, a Brazilian warrior who was key in fighting against slavery Brazil
....who has been gracing my avatar for weeks.

as in João da Cruz e Sousa, a famous poet and journalist who was actually born in the same area of Brazil my grandmother's family is from (Santa Catarina)

the moment you see me honoring some white PORTUGUESE historical figure and tryna align myself with them is the moment u need to tap me on my shoulder like "umm afro, didn't they enslave ur african ancestors? "

Im a southside born n raised , ATLien with afro-Brazilian roots

and guess what? am super proud of it all 🤷🏾
some could even ask "can u really claim ATL tho? Gor u just got there  :uhh: "
yeah bitch I can. Cuz I feel it in my SOUL.

Atlanta feels like HOME . It felt like home to me years before I chose to actually get my home here so yeah hoe I'll claim it.

this afro-brazilian thing was super random . But I feel it in my SOUL.

maybe because i have been super close with afro-Latinos for the longest time . Although I have never really known an afro-Brazilian. Even in NYC that nationality is rare - at least from my experience . It's usually black Dominicans , Puerto Rican's etc .

but the CULTURE Is what makes Brazil fucking amazing. Hell yeah am proud . The fuck?

RuPaul introduced me to this saying/belief that I absolutely love.

"What you think of me is none of my business."

I've answered questions about my grandmother's DNA results and what they mean - which I feel is fair because I mean, if you put information out in some way and people have questions about said information, it's def not unreasonable for them to ask questions.

That's totally understandable and it's fair.

But as far as going into some conversations or debates about whether or not I should be embracing what I've discovered, etc. That's really up to whomever is viewing it in their minds, and there's nothing I can do or say to change their mind or perception about that.

It's really none of my business.

I don't really deeply identify with the whole Jewish thing but it's nice and very interesting to know my grandpas roots. It's fun.

Otherwise the whole mess in itself is kinda boring. I'm not religious at ALL and it's literally an ethnoreligious group . 🥱 whole bunch of god this and god that.

I don't even qualify cuz the ancestry is thru my grandpa and by traditional Jewish law .. you are Jewish thru maternal lines, not paternal . ReGardless of your DNA.

And even if I did I wouldn't be in a synagogue somewhere speaking to a rabbi. Dndnfnfnfnfnnc I don't even attend baptist church and that's what I was raised in.

the fuck. Nfnf

Finding out about brazil is actually super exciting and something I can get with and practice maybe in real life once I have more time . Its very me. Fun. It's really about the CULTURE.

But I appreciate my great grandmas story and respect it , and even honor it. Pretty sure she didn't here come from Lithuania during that era just for fun. I'm happy to honor her.

Afro, I hate to beat a dead horse but "Brazilian" is a nationality. A few pages back you revealed that neither you or your granny were born outside of America. Why were you toting that notion that you were Brazilian around the board?

Also, I'm glad you removed it from your signature.

hey boo! I'm happy to answer and inform a bit. What you brought up is very valid and worthy of a response.

I am actually, in part, genetically Brazilian.

Although Brazilian is a nationality , there are certain genetic markers which can definitely let you now if you actually have blood ties to the country - most specifically, it would be Native American markers - because although "African" and "European" markers and heritage can come from anywhere (due to European colonization and enslaved African people being dropped off at all points of the diaspora), Native American markers are more specific to the country, as they were there first - and are really the only population that wasn't moved or shipped in to a country from somewhere else.

Does that make sense? I know it's a mouthful. lol

I actually have genetic markers which point to South American Indigenous heritage.
More specifically, Brazil.

And it's EXACT same amount on each test. Which shows consistency. It's like, getting a 2nd opinion just to be extra sure.
Here are some of MY results from two different tests:

Now let's go to my lovely grandma.  Here's where the math really starts mathing.

Aside from her DNA results literally saying she has roots in Brazil and giving the specific city she's from..

Nothing really surprised me about her results aside from the 10% "Asian". That's what made me scratch my head initially,
because Black people in the diaspora are generally mostly African, followed by some European due to the slave trade. "Asian" is not a part of the Black genetic makeup.

And I discovered that sometimes DNA tests can pick up Native American heritage as "Asian". Which isn't inaccurate scientifically because, at their most ancient roots, Native Americans are from Central/Northeast Asia.

Here are some of her results:
Again - I got more than one opinion just to establish consistency and ensure accuracy.
Results from two different tests:

As you can see, the  "Asian" markers are around the same amount on each. So it's safe to assume this is real/accurate and not a mistake.

For some reason, tests are able to pick up my Brazilian Native heritage as just that, but it translates my grandmother's as "Asian". lol Which is odd but I mean DNA tests are still in its infancy. You really have to know how to make sense of what you're looking at before jumping to conclusions.

Also - the math is right. If I'm showing 2-3% Native Brazilian, and it's coming from my grandmother specifically, she'd have to be around 9-12%. Which she is.

My grandmother descends from Brazilians who were mainly a mix of African and Native American.
In Brazil, they are called Pardos. Or Cafuzos. That's the ethnic group.

If you look at Brazilian Natives, or many Native American groups for that part, it's super clear that they have Asian origins.
This has been studied and theorized previously (the Bering Strait story), but DNA tests are actually proving those theories to be right.

QuoteThe ancestors of Native American populations from the tip of Chile in the south to Canada in the north, migrated from Asia in at least three waves, according to a new international study published online in Nature this week that involved over 60 investigators in 11 countries in the Americas, plus four in Europe, and Russia.

So yes I do have actual ties to Brazil, as I am actually in part Indigenous to the country...
AND the siggy will be back soon so buckle up lol. :woohoo:
