I don't know much about August.  He was molested, homeless, addicted to drugs, and had a bad relationship with his mother.  In swoops Jada "mentoring" him, calling him her son, and helping him get off drugs.

I'm sorry, this is weird as fuck.

I always wondered why August was so close with them. This explains it.
