Jennifer Lopez talks nearly starring in A Star Is Born with Will Smith before Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga... but project 'just never took off'

A Star Is Born is one of the biggest critical and commercial hits of the year, starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, but it almost featured two different stars entirely.

Jennifer Lopez was previously attached to star alongside Will Smith, and while that incarnation never came together, Lopez recently discussed it in an interview with Extra.

'Will and I talked about it and talked about developing the script,' Lopez said. 'It just never took off. Projects are like that.'

There was no traction on the project for nearly a decade, until 2011, when Clint Eastwood was tapped to direct with Leonardo DiCaprio and Beyonce starring.

Beyonce would back out in 2012 to focus on her family and after DiCaprio backed out, a number of stars were considered such as Christian Bale, Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe and Eminem.

That incarnation stalled as well until 2015, when Warner Bros.' started approaching Cooper to star and make his directorial debut, with Lady Gaga coming aboard in 2016 to make her feature film debut.

As of now, A Star Is Born as earned $197 million at the domestic box office and $370.5 million worldwide, from a $36 million budget.

Despite missing out on the chance to star in this remake, Lopez added how proud she was of Cooper for his directorial debut.

'I'm really proud of Bradley, one for directing his first film and doing it,' Lopez added.
