then i ran across this on my FB timeline.
i wish i hadn't run across it cuz it made me so sad. but its important to remember.

As many times as I explore every inch of New York City, I always find something new to me. Today was no exception as I visited the African Burial Ground National Monument for the first time. Discovered in 1991 when the city made plans to construct a Federal Building, there were hundreds of bodies, layered beneath the soil. Not buried randomly, each of the bodies were placed in coffins and buried with their heads pointing west. The site initially covered 6.6 acres. New York City Hall and The Federal Building are two of the buildings constructed over the graves. Of course developers were ready to pour concrete and go ahead with chasing the dollar. It wasn't until collective protest and outrage from the community that they resettled the graves, had each exhumed body (419 mostly women and children), reburied in a hand made coffins from Ghana and placed in the the new cemetery. There is a museum that's worth exploring. It's all free. Spend some time in this sacred space. Lower Manhattan, the financial epicenter of the United States is literally built on top of slaves.
