Legends I think are immediately & indisputably recognized imo:

Whitney
Michael Jackson
Prince
Janet
Madonna
Mariah

Im sure there are more(I probably forgot a few) but for me and stuff....
These are def the legends of this generation

What about of our gen?
Beyonce
I want to say R.Kelly even though he's not apart of our generation
Britney is arguable
Rihanna maybe
Usher fell off hard
Justin Timberlake?

I agree with most of this besides JT. Commercially he's cool but as far as influence idk...

Donna Summer
Minnie Riperton
Cher
Chaka Khan
Marvin Gaye

The list is endless

So by definition, why are some of these ppl legends?  Not saying they aren't just curious.

Donna - she OWNED the disco era and she's an underrated singer.

Minnie - she's credited for the use of her whistle register

Cher - iconic fashions, reinventing herself, etc

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On, Sexual Healing need I say more almost every R&B male singer cites him as an influence

Chaka Khan - Sweet Thing, Tell Me Something Good, I Feel for You, I'm Every Woman. Timeless iconic songs and music.

Aalumeci.

Sales and trophy a don't make a legend.

Legend is opinion anyway. It's someone who is famous for doing something really well, even more if they've inspired someone/something. But someone may think Lumidee songs amazingly and someone else will disagree. I guess there are undeniables like MJ and Madonna tho.

Long lasting cultural impact makes you a legend. That's it. It's how you are remembered.

I agree. Which is why the Whits, Jans, MJs, etc are undeniable. They've stood the test of time. Can't really do a "legends" of our generation. "Most popular" maybe. Or sub categories like Icon and such

Pretty much!

And it's not just stats or things of that nature it's really about what legacy you leave behind...

Some people/things could have been a flop during their lifetime and become legendary because of their catalogue being rediscovered or constantly references. And vice versa.
