Wow.

I mean yes "ghetto names" are a Kii
Not gonna sit up and act like it's not an ongoing joke within our community

But she should really take into consideration how big of a a platform she's on before making certain statements.

You're on national TV
Not at the house with ur Kii Kii gorls

Nnnnnnnnnnn I'm on this social security office floor in tears

FINE.

She tried it sitting up there looking like a rooster. Say she was hiring..I wouldn't take any employer serious looking the way she does

What is wrong with what she said??

It isn't "Africanized" names. It is GHETTO ass names. I looked past a name recently that was LITERALLY named after a LIQOUR for the first name, and a FRUIT for the middle name. NEXT.

Parent's fault BUT I would change it with the quickness to make up for my parent's mistake and be taken seriously in a professional field.
she's a self hating fool. As if "Raven" is some white sounding/acceptable name
im really crying
You'd think her name was Sarah or something

RAY7

but the fact that she REALLY thought it was funny & ppl would join her
Its one thing to not like hood names but to not hire a person? Thats not cool
Arquanika might have a PHD and outstanding resume. I hope a black woman with a Ghetto name
gets an exec job at ABC and gives her ass the boot

There is power in a name though.

Which is sometimes underestimated or overestimated .

Very much like a product or a company
People spend years developing the ins and outs of the product or organization
But the name is crucial.

And in business you're constantly selling yourself. You're the product.
I do believe in the power of a name. And definitely believe in stereotypes which surround them.

Just close your eyes and envision what someone named "Amy" would look like
Now close your eyes and imagine what "Daquan" would look like.

Whether we'd admit or not, we associate names with imagery. We can't help it.
Your name is one of the most important assets you have. It's on your birth certificate and its on your tombstone.

I'd definitely take time thinking of my child's name before just blurting something out.
But raven could have presented her point way more eloquently. this is highly offensive to people who may have these names.

Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In

Well, there are some crazy ass names out there. And there have been ghetto ass names around for years. Like there was a woman who was arrested and her name was NOMATTER. I'm dead ass serious too. When I read that I was like wtf? :plzstop:  I already promised myself that if  I ever become a father I'm going to be extremely wise about the names of my children.

True but only an idiotic employer would discriminate because of a name

True. A name shouldn't be the basis on employment. It should be about the skills that the potential candidate has and how they can be an important asset to a company.

thats all nice and true, but looks=/= employment
there are stereotypes about looks, but if Daquan has the experience & knowledge he deserves a job as much as Amy

I never argued that someone's looks or name should be a determining factor in whether they are unemployable or not.

I'm simply acknowledging the stereotypes associated with names, that's all. Raven was speaking somewhat of a truth, but she sounded like a complete idiot. This discussion could have been amazing had she not scared the white gorls away from it with her derogatory remarks. Once she went there, you could tell they wanted no parts of it

And how bout "Whoopi"? would you hire her? n

surprised she didn't speak up. Raven is the type to say some shit like this, but then put down that SAME girl for not having a job. its disgusting and im not sure why she's trying to impress people that view her as a coon as well

Whoopi's birth name is Caryn Johnson... Because of the kind of work she does she can get away with Whoopi, that is her stage name. And that name came from the whoopee cushion which is designed to make people laugh
