I wasn't really used to hearing terms like "ooh look she light skindededed  ", "oooh she got that good hair" and mess in my house. So I never really focused on color -- to the point where I barely even really separated whites from Blacks. I mean I could tell the difference visually (duh) but I had to actually LEARN the social complexities behind what I saw on the surface.
