MTV and TRL were so big at the time that I don't think anyone cared about chart positions. If your video was Top 5 on TRL you were a success.

The industry has changed so much and I think it started during 2008 when Gaga stepped on the scene.

When did Youtube start? I would say the birth Youtube and the shift from illegal downloads to legal streaming effected the chart positions more than Gaga did.
I was speaking more so about the creation of stans and worrying about chart positions and mess.

Honestly, it's always been that way, the Lambs and Gradonna fans argue their respective sales downe, it was just more visible in the mid-2000s girls because we had social media.

I love the fact that we can look back at stuff like this and realize that even tho charts, numbers, and plaques were mentioned, it wasn't a huge part of the conversation for the consumer/fans.

Love it. We just enjoyed the damn music for fuck sakes

Yeah I was kinda shocked when I found out "Beautiful" was the only big HIT she had that era.

The rest were moderate hits or flops.

The song was pretty gross though, so I get it. But considering she was coming back from such a major debut, you woulda thought the first single would have charted better

Back then, there wasn't iTunes or anything, so chart positions were pretty much mainly based on airplay. Radio wasn't gonna play Dirrty.
People still purchased singles.
back in the vinyl days, right U?

Right. And it still went on to sell 9 million albums. A lot of Britney's singles werent huge hits either, but her albums sold.
