I get that it's used as slang, but that doesn't change the fact that the word is used derogatorily toward mentally handicapped people, and I'm sure they/the people who care about them don't appreciate it. It's like when people use the word "gay" as a substitute for "lame." It's just tacky.

Well hopefully the general public agrees with you. It's not the end of the world, I'd just hate for her to come across negatively if it could be avoided. I know that there's a pretty big push in the public school system to eradicate the use of that word among kids right now.
