Title: If we identify as "black", why do we get uneasy when white people say it?
Post by: Herb. on November 15, 2015, 05:24:15 PM
I mean it's clear why white people use caution, even when singing rap songs because of the "n" word, but why are they on eggshells using the "b" word? It's something that we, even our leaders within the community, openly and proudly identify as.

Because the word "black" has so many negative connotations. Evil, untrustworthy, dirty etc

I hate when a white co-worker says African-American. Cut the political correctness. Cause you probably call me a nigger in private.

I thought I was the only one who cringed when whites go out of their way to be PC.
Like, just say black. It's OK. lollll

A lot of it has to do with context as well.
And what the conversation entails. Trump definitely needs to be on eggshells due to his reputation.
But when it comes to friends, etc. I'm like OMG. It's almost a form of patronization, if that makes sense.

So if the word is so negative by association, why do we label ourselves as black?
It's good enough for us to identify with, but not good enough for others to recognize us as too?
I'm not trolling just trying to understand.

I'm questioning this, because when I think "black", I don't think of evil, and dirt..
I think of our history, our culture....our strength .....
Maybe this is why I don't mind others just saying it.
Yes, I'm black, Josh. Thank you for just putting it out on the table. Stop beating around the bush. I am proud to be black and do not mind you saying it!

Now, those other words, luv....tread carefully

Maybe it's a foreign thing. When I hear black, I think POWER! That's what I feel/see when I look in the mirror...as a black man.

I don't care if they call me black.  Just don't refer to all black people as "blacks".  There is a difference to me.  I definitely call white people "white people," but I don't call them "whites."  There is just something derogatory about it.

I see what you mean

But I think so many of these things have to do with the way we've associated these terms within our own community

For instance, say the term "dark skinned" and people are giving the side eye...say the term "light skinned" and people are rolling their eyes...and don't you dare fucking say "mixed".  :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop:
