QuoteThe 'F9' actor thinks there has been a "shift" but colorism is still an issue in Hollywood and even though he is a "star", he'll be turned down for parts because of his dark skin.
Speaking on radio show 'Leah's Lemonade', he said: "Terrence Howard has no idea how many roles that I was about to book and they went with him because he's the lighter-skinned black man with the green eyes.
"I'm the star. I'm this blue-black, you know, all of the things that I was laughed about in the 'hood.
"And then you look at Lupita [Nyong'o] and the Viola Davises of the world, and there is this kind of, this shift that has happened. I think we should all stay humble because it's interesting how white people created this kind of colorism.
"The mixed-race gets to be in the house and the black blacks get to work in the hot sun and pick cotton."
The 42-year-old star admitted attitudes in Hollywood echoed those he encountered as a child.
He added: "Throughout my whole childhood, it was not cool to be dark skin in the hood. It was always the light-skinned black people that seemed to have gotten all the attention and all the love and considered pretty, or attractive, or handsome. And since I've been in Hollywood we dealt with the same thing."
Despite losing roles to Terrence, Tyrese doesn't bear a grudge and even recommended the 'Empire' actor for a role in his upcoming thriller 'The System'.
He said: "We're able to joke about it now. I was the star of the film. They had an idea to go with someone else, who I won't mention, and then I suggested Terrence Howard. And he thanked me for like, a week straight."
I'm glad he's speaking out ... he's def touching on internalized anti-blackness and projection within the community as well
People calling him "blue-black", etc
It's not often hetero black men come out and speak on these things , even when they've clearly been victimized

that wasn't his point

He's absolutely bullshitting and overstepping about losing roles to Terrence "because" of light skin and eyes. Terrence is a trained actor. An impressive and respectable actor. An award nominated and winning actor. He's simply chosen because he's the more qualified candidate. Cryese is a singer who FELL in acting. He has an overinflated view of himself and is annoying as hell.

Bow is kinda speaking truth - In general . I know this as fact
I have a much younger cousin on my dads side who is hetero and unambiguously black and he told me himself about anti-blackness he experienced and how it affected the way he sees black people in terms of potential love interests
He ends up with white girls and I'm sure people would question that downe and make assumptions , but I know the backstory .
People made fun of everything from his larger lips to his skin, to his hair .
We talk a lot about black women and how anti blackness affects them and I am very passionate about it , but I will never forget that unambiguously black hetero men suffer too.
Not saying this is the case for EVERY nigga we see chasing exoticals .... But I get it

And was there some influx of light skin male actors that I missed or something?

Colorism exists but I'm not seeing in here

He admitted to me that his grandparents basically told him that he better not bring a black bitch home to them . And made HIM feel bad about his blackness throughout his childhood .
Y'all can't just throw black peoples stated experience in the trash without considering it may be true .
Tyrese is a very dark unambiguously Black man. You think he's LYING? :uhh: :uhh: or just bringing this mess up for fun?

sometimes we can be our own worst enemy
azealia banks flat out went on twitter and promoted bleaching creams and called black people monkeys
but sometimes u have to think a bit further than the individual's actions or choices and try to understand what's really going on
especially if they're literally LAYING it out right in front of you.
but i think sometimes our priority is BASHING one another instead of really taking that time to scratch our head JUST a bit.

thats understandable kwee.
but it's all a cycle IMO - especially when someone is revealing what they've experienced in the past.
i legit know someone who feels he's obligated to date exoticals
not because HE has always felt that way, but because of what his family forced on him
that shit matters because what ppl experience in childhood usually STICKS for a very long time.
as a grown ass man, he's just now coming to realize that he can do whatever he wants.
and is telling me "u know what....i got me a gorgeous black girl. she's not mixed, shes not exotic. shes straight up black. and i dont care what my family thinnks . I like her. "
i helped him really THINK about what he was dealing with instead of LABELING him and dismissing him.
that's when he opened up to me.
but i can guarantee u if i came at him on some " omg get tf away from me u hate yourself nigga!" mess nothing would have been solved. he woulda pushed back and put his defenses all the way up.
Tyrese is sharing something ive never heard him share before. It's worth listening to
his Black experience matters.
