QuoteThe woman who died has been named as Halyna Hutchins - a 42-year-old director of photography. A spokesman for Baldwin, who is producing and starring in the film Rust, said there was an accident involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks.
A woman has died and a man has been injured after actor Alec Baldwin discharged a prop firearm on the set of new Western movie Rust.
The woman has been named as Halyna Hutchins, a 42-year-old director of photography, and the injured man is Joel Souza, the film's director.
Hutchins was transported via helicopter to University of New Mexico Hospital, but was later pronounced dead.
:guys:
How do you misfire a prop gun with "supposed" blank bullets tho? Something ain't right with that story :shook:
Omg this is terrible and fucking random
Hollywood is so weird
How has this happened multiple times?
I saw this earlier
This is so bizarre
That's how Bruce Lee's son died
How can you call something a "prop" if it's real and fully loaded? :disgusted:
Literally out there playing with guns and :-o !!! someone gets hurt!

I have zero experience with guns but I remember an episode of CSI where they explained that even with blanks you can kill someone because of the pressure that comes out of that gun. (I was on a set of a Photoshoot once and there were strict rules and it wasn't even loaded.) This is also how Brandon Lee died. There should have been people keeping an eye on the gun, with blanks you still have to keep distance.
QuoteIn 1984, the actor Jon-Erik Hexums put a gun filled with blanks to his head, and, joking about delays to filming, he pulled the trigger (https://ew.com/article/1994/10/14/jon-erik-hexums-fatal-joke/). The force of the wadding was enough to fatally injure him.
Instead of using a bullet, blanks use wads (https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/71752/how-do-blanks-work-compared-regular-bullets) of paper, plastic, felt or cotton – this wadding ensures you get a certain level of flame out of the gun.
But this wadding is the thing which can cause a lot of injury: just because a gun is using blanks, that doesn't mean it isn't dangerous.
We are filmmakers who work with firearms. This is what is important in on-set safetyhttps://theconversation.com/we-are-filmmakers-who-work-with-firearms-this-is-what-is-important-in-on-set-safety-170455 (https://theconversation.com/we-are-filmmakers-who-work-with-firearms-this-is-what-is-important-in-on-set-safety-170455)

It means you put the gun too close; on someone's head or body and shoot the blanks. It's probably not the gun that was acting up (you can expect there to be pressure/flame), it's a lack of security measures.
The director of photography and the director? Must've been some horseplay.

Apparently the guns they use on movie sets are real guns but they shoot blanks, but there's a whole safety element around shooting blanks that wasn't properly checked before use

Crew members were talking on the radio this morning and they said whenever they use real guns, the blanks give a more realistic tea when they fire, apparently they can't replicate the bang, smoke and fire from a fired gun

Brandon Lee, the son of Bruce Lee, died in a similar freak accident on set. It's insane how your life can be snuffed out at an instant over a mishap ...that's why I'm always careful with how I drive or when I go outdoors in general.

im sure this is true but i just refuse to believe this in 2021. Sounds like this is just the less expensive route to go and i hate that :uhh: they're going to have to change the laws after this tragedy or figure it the fuck out cuz a lot of actors are gonna start turning down roles involving guns. I feel bad for him and the family of the women who died. Always liked Alec Baldwin. Seems like a great guy to me and he's great in everything. Blame whoever allowed a loaded gun on set.

glad they're calling out this "prop" mess.
you can't call a real gun a "prop"
it's a fuckin loaded gun :uhh: and you're playing with it for the cameras
with all the technology we have and creative editing available why tf do ppl need to be playing with real guns ?
now other TV production companies are having real guns replaced on set with fake ones
sad it took someone to lose their life for these people to wake up
if they MUST have a live gun on set, at least change the language used.
referring to something as a "prop" may cause people to be too relaxed about having it on set
"prop" sounds fun and part of make believe.

Yes it's crazy. I also heard blanks and bullets were stored in the same area and people used guns after filming to play around with it. Shoot some targets.
