Title: Is this guy in the wrong for not giving his seat to a pregnant woman on the bus?
Post by: Kalifornia. on November 29, 2021, 12:26:22 PM
QuoteThis happened just last night, and my family completely lost their minds at me about it. So here I am.

I take the bus to and from work (car got totaled about a month ago, still waiting on insurance to reimburse me so I can get a new one), and right now on public transit you have to social distance. This means limited seating.

At my job, I'm literally on my feet all day, and I work 10 hour shifts. It sucks but the pay is good, so I can deal, but after a long day, my feet are sore AF. I genuinely cherish the time I spend sitting on the bus ride home, knowing I have to walk another 15-20 minutes to my house from the bus stop. Which means more time on my feet.

So last night I'm on the bus, and a very heavily pregnant lady gets on. She looks around for a seat, only to find there are no available ones left. I'm the closest to her, so she starts giving me the imploring eyes. I had my headphones on and tried to pretend I couldn't see her, but once she started talking to me it became inevitable.

I wasn't rude or anything, I just told her no, I've had a long day and my feet are sore. I don't want to give up my seat. She started crying about how she's a pregnant single mom, and I told her I'm sorry, but that was her personal choice and she can't expect other people to accommodate her life choices. We live in a state where birth control and abortions are free, so I don't know why this should be my problem. It's not my fault she decided to have a baby when she can't afford a car.

After going back and forth for a bit, an old man finally shouted that I'm a "worthless punk" and offered his seat to the lady. He started ranting and raving about the "damn millennials" and I just looked the other way and pretended I didn't hear it. As they were trading seats, the bus driver had to slam the brakes for whatever reason, and the pregnant lady and the old man both fell. They started yelling at me, calling me all sorts of nasty names, but I just looked the other way and ignored it.

When I got home and told my sister, she flipped the fuck out and went crying to our parents, who also chewed my ass out. But I was tired and had a long day, and I don't know why we need to keep perpetuating the idea that breeding somehow means your entitled to people's seats. I'm tired, too, we're all tired in this pandemic. AITA, though?

Not giving up your seat to pregnant women or old people is rude. However, if you also struggle with your health it makes sense to ask someone else on the bus to give up their seat. In this case what really bothers me is that when they fell over he didn't even bother to help. He just ignored them..that's just terrible. It makes me feel like he is just making excuses about being tired because he feels entitled to a seat.

Honestly speaking, if they had started talking shit about me and then fell over I wouldn't have helped either. Probably would've kii'd too.

I mean the bus driver ain't even supposed to move until the pregnant woman is seated. Not him driving off while she was still standing and then making a SUDDEN stop so both they asses could fall

The front of the bus is legally prioritized for disabled, elderly, and pregnant woman though. Anyone CAN sit there but they are the priority. Idk how it works with forcing people to get up though.

Sounds like he is just as broke as she is. Also, he doesn't HAVE to give up his seat, but his poor little itty bitty fruity feet don't compare to what a pregnant lady feels. So no, he didn't HAVE to, but he's a dick for not

I don't see why it had to be a big deal. He said no, she should've just moved on to the next person, who most likely would have obliged and she wouldn't have fallen and busted her ass

They cant be forced to get up. I'm VERY familiar with the rules. People have all types of disabilities and those disabilities may not be as obvious as a broken leg or pregnancy

Right what made him the person OBLIGATED to give up his seat. He has a story just like she did, so she shouldve moved to the next person. Most would oblige the pregnant or elderly in sitting down

This pregnant woman fell and an innocent life could have been affected and his response is "So I'm tired, too,"? Sometimes it's not all about you. Then an elderly man fell down because he was in the process of giving her his seat, and who knows what kind of health issues he may have. Then, to be like why didn't you just get rid of your kid; it's free. I hope the whole internet chews his ass out. :plea:

I don't know about the US but in London most young men sit in the back or upstairs. The front seats are meant for the elderly, disabled and pregnant.
