Stole this from lipstickalley. Where'd the male love songs go? From the niggas? :omgwatshappening:

This is something I've noticed in the past few years, but that Ne-Yo thread solidified it for me. We have Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, and even Justin Bieber representing the love songs for the white guys and they are dominating the radio with their love songs. I mean not a summer goes by without at least one of them dropping either a ballad like "Perfect" or a bop like "Watermelon Sugar", but when is the last time you can recall black men en masse having love songs on the radio? Not "I fucked your bitch! She sucked my dick". R&B doesn't even have love songs like that anymore.
I mean "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran is a masterpiece. The last black male artist with a song like that is probably John Legend with "All of Me."
Lil Nas X "Someone to Love Me" is one on the radio now, but is his music in the "urban" category? It's all so nebulous, but even if he is, he is the only one on the radio right now with a love song.
This person said named 3 White artists, then asked why aren't Black male artists making love songs "en masse." Also, I hope this person got ate up over there because this is inaccurate on the basis of which artists get pushed and are the most popular. Male R&B artists DO make love songs and they can be found on their albums but not the radio. Sounds like the problem is why are the record labels pushing "nigga! bitch! sex!" songs to Black radio.
Giveon just to name one. Also ,,Perfect" is as basic as it gets. And what's wrong with songs about sex?

Exactly.
I agree that Mainstream male R&B artists aren't pulling their weight when it comes to great albums like the girls are, but Jacquees (ew), YK Osiris, Daniel Caesar, Silk Sonic, Giveon, Tory Lanez, Yung Bleu etc have all had smash love songs in the last few years. Chris' "No Guidance" was a massive hit for 2 consecutive years :dead:
Is she asking why they don't make stripped piano & acoustic ballads? ...Because the love songs are there :udontlookok:

vvvvvvccc yea
she just has a preference. SORRY sis, we all miss the 90's mess but dont get on here and lie :omf:
I think people just need to accept the fact that music has changed. And is not meant to stay the same. In the 90s, our parents/grandparents probably wanted that doo-wop, motown sound back, but it just aint eva coming back.
Sounds like a white person who only listens to Z100 to me. If he/she looks on the R&B section of Tidal, Apple Music or Spotify there's plenty of love songs or even try playing a Black radio station

not "No Guidance"
But yeah black music is in the gutter.
I blame Hip hop and the record labels.
Daniel Caesar has been thriving off of love songs, his love singles are still playing on radio & a part of the R&B playlists on streaming services

Yes but his popularity should be far greater, maybe that's what the op meant?

I dont think the male artists themselves are responsible for their popularity. There's too many other factors that go into that. But I'm literally listening to the radio right now and "Woman" by Stokley sounds like a love song. he's not popular but...... Black male artists make love songs.
This is broad generalisation. I can think of plenty of male R&B singers that make love songs :uhh:

hits on the urban charts? Yes
Hits on the level of Ed Sheeran and Harry Styles of course not. But they said: "R&B doesn't even have love songs like that anymore"
Which is a lie
What songs are hits?
Being honest. I don't listen to the radio.
