Title: Question for the REAL Starz
Post by: demitri.petty on March 16, 2022, 05:36:13 PM
Well. It's for the ones that were teens or young adults during the 90's or 2000's..

What was your reaction when you heard Brandy's voice change from NSN to FM? I was 5 around the time so I've grown up used to hearing her darker tone but I'm just stoned and wondering lol

In my opinion, I feel like she's the only artist voice who has matured and changed. Like a lot of the girls don't show vocal growth lol

I was amazed. I love Brandy's NSN voice now because it's so unique, but back then I thought it sounded "strained" even though I loved all the songs.. The full moon tone was so open and free. There was so much agility, more highs, more lows, more precision. I still have not heard growth on this level between albums from anyone else.  Most people have not grown that much in skill and creativity over their entire careers.

That song vocally sounds like a transition but certain parts def sounded like NSN bran.

I thought something was wrong with her voice at the time vncnncncnc. I was very young at the time  but I do remember the big difference vs. the Cinderella songs..

I think her voice change is more drastic between the Debut and NSN

I still remember the first time I heard "I Thought". I was gagged.

The Full Moon album is what made me start stanning.

This is why Brandy is my favorite singer! No one else showed growth and evolution vocally like she did... we literally watched her go from a teen voice to a grown ass woman super layered voice

Never say never was my musical awakening

Full Moon blew my mind. It gave me everything and more of what I didn't think I needed.

afrodisiac took a few listens but after that I was done for. Nothing has topped this trinity ever'

wow the memories

I was 9 years old and I remember feeling something was different with her, Like her verses sounded like a new Brandy but her hooks still had her teen sound, by Afro I was in love with her new voice  :blessed:

Tbh I was puzzled, I genuinely didn't know what to think. It was so new compared to the other music I was hearing, even from her.

However, once my ears adjusted (happend with every project beside Human) it was jaw dropping. I was still hearing new things 2 years into listening. FM is when I saw Brandy as an artist and not just a teen pop singer.

What about us was definitely a change from the Disney Princess/Moesha I was used to (the beat, the attitude, the video). The Full Moon album was a lot more futuristic and production felt more hiphop to me. I was so used to the old sound - Have you ever, Almost doesn't count, Truthfully that I really needed songs like Wow, He is, Love wouldn't count me out, Nothing. And later on I started stanning for the more experimental songs like All in me and I thought but it took a while.

I think maybe if I had listened to an album like TLC- fanmail I would have been more prepared. I had the same experience with Whitney Houston. I was hooked on this ballad compilation cd and My Love is Your Love wasn't what I expected, but now I really love it.

I loved Afrodisiac from start to finish from the day I got the cd. Who I am was a perfect introduction by the way.

I remember going downtown to the cd 💿 shop and buying it and listening to it in my cd Walkman on the walk home. Full Moon was so mind blowing in its new sound that I had to repeat it 2 or 3 times before listening to the rest of the album.

I LOVE THIS DISCUSSION. NO ONE IN MUSIC HAS THE VOCAL GROWTH BRANDY HAS.
ALSO, I WISH SHE STILL WORKED WITH RODNEY. I THINK THE SYSTEM THEY HAD WORKED
SO WELL FOR SHOWING HER GROWTH AND SHE TOOK MORE RISK.

I thought her voice was computer simulated or something because it sounded too perfect. I couldn't comprehend how a human was making these sounds.

The vocal growth was evident and she was showing more range and agility.
