Title: is the age of ERAs.... over?
Post by: klappa. on April 08, 2022, 02:05:13 PM
i've been looking at how NONE of the new acts in any category are giving what the girs seem to want

but i'm starting to feel like the expectation for artist roll outs are rooted in the past/what we got used to

single --> video --> album drop --> repeat 1-3x

but we living in the age of saweetie now. no albums necessary

single --> ride the buzz --> repeat ∞

have the days of an era passed us? do we need to adjust our expectations to the new way the gors are approaching it? thoughts...

Dua and Doja are two of the only girls who have given us an ERA.

nah, look at doja

she's milking her mess & woman is shaping up to be her biggest hit of the era  :dead:

I feel like Doja and Dua are the exceptions, not the rule. which was probably Oph's point.

Most girls don't really have eras anymore, with rollouts, like the ones we were used to.

tbh I wouldn't say eras are over but they've definitely changed.

It's more like throwing out a bunch of singles, then just dropping the album and going back to making more singles.

Well the newer tiktok generation doesn't have much of an attention span so maybe

But when an artist can actually churn out an era and ride it out, it pays off. ie Dua & Future Nostalgia, Invasion Of Privacy, The Weeknd's previous era, ANTI, etc

On a positive note, I feel like the microwavable era we live in his good for creatives/indie gorls

Nashe churns out multiple projects/EPs based on her inspiration at the time

Charli XCX caters to her fanbase like this among the pop zorls

Shit, even Calvin Harris said he'd focus more on singles/EPs

The problem for me is the quality. Cause its less of oof wanna dabble with something creatively different on various EPs

& more of throwing shit out till it sticks and not being able to carry an album for many reasons (shit some of my faves might fall under this category)

I think it's more so because the girls are FLOPPING down and throwing out anything if they don't get a top 10. (Megan the Stallion, Clohe, etc)

No the girls still do eras. Olivia Rodrigo, Billie, The Weeknd, Dua, Ed, Doja, etc have all recently given traditional eras that were used to. Hell even Brandy, Tinashe and Charli XCX have managed to churn an era out given the circumstances. However, with the way music is consumed now due to streaming, A lot of what we once considered an ERA was post album. now, most of the MESS happens before the album is released so it doesn't feel as much like an era.

so to answer... eras are still here, they just look a bit different

Kinda.  Everything is done online now, so, no matter what, it's pretty hard to make anything feel like it did back in the day.  There are many creative Artists doing their thing consistently though.

Dawn Richard did a great job over the years

i feel like were in the age of MINI eras

like the girls drop an ep with ONE single/video then bop on to the next

feels like they just drop an album when the stans drag them enough on twitter

Eras still exist, for those making good music and want to milk projects. Some of the vets are the ones shrinking their eras. Beyonce, for example, putting out a whole movie for an album kinda kills the era and the anticipation of a new music video and build up to an album release. Kanye just drops his albums now. Drake does the same. And then they disappear. Newer acts with something to prove are giving us eras (Billie, Doja, Lil Nas X, etc).

I don't think so.... it just looks different. I feel like the girls have a full era BEFORE the release of the album. :uhh: They drop like 3 or 4 singles before they drop the album

but do buzz singles count towards an era?

i only mark the first official single as the start of an era mess
