Title: 2000's Music Girls
Post by: L0NZ. on August 01, 2023, 03:33:24 PM
What are the eras of Hiphop/R&B of the 2000's? Like break it down into 3 or 4 and what do you think are examples of the "sound" or innovation of that era

Well first, if you break down by producers:

Porkchild
Neptunes
Timbaland
Scott Storch

Did every other producer/sound fall under each one of them?

I would add a category for that Be Without You and Ne-Yo (So sick, Mario's Let me love you) sound making an introduction in 04/05

Yes Murder Inc & So So Def would be part of it as well

I can see there being Neptunes and Scott eras. What sound would you categorize each as? Are we doing Scott/Middle Eastern sounds and Neptune/melodic keys/soundscapes?

I dont see Tim as much as those 2 in a 2000's rap/R&B convo.

:kii: Rodney is too versatile to relegate him to a sound.

I'll throw Swizz Beatz in there.

I wanna say Tricky Stewart as well.

Examples of Stargate sound

Jordin Sparks - Tattoo
Chris Brown - With You
Beyonce - Irreplaceable
Rihanna - Hate That I Love You
Rihanna - Unfaithful
Ne-Yo - So Sick

A lot of artists during the mid 2000s rode that alternative R&B wave.

The Neptunes sound def was a 2000s staple as well, that's when they got mainstream attention with Luda, Jay, NORE, LL Cool J, Snoop, The Clipse, Kelis, Slim Thug, Usher...

But I'll throw Lil' Jon in the 2000s mix of sounds and can't forget when OG Kanye came and took over

The early 00s were generally a bit more pop sounding. Then as the years passed more KNOCK and unconventional styles were added to the productions. Lonz already mentioned those Middle Eastern samples. I personally think mid-00s R&B was very diverse. You had a song like Goodies and 1 Thing and they both sound completely different yet they're both R&B. And then somehow it got very electronic by the end of the 00s.

Timbaland def influenced a lot of his peers in the 00s. Darkchild got a bit more edgy and grittier with Lose My Breath for example.

I was gonna say Lil Jon but his sound was a part of that Crunk&B and Snap movement

B. Cox, Kanye, Lil Jon!!

I think it's a little difficult to categorize that time into 4 eras because they were all so different and each producer era overlappped.

Damn I forgot about Rich Harrison and how he incorporated D.C. go-go sound into R&B music.

I forget the specific years but off the top off my head:

- Dancehall
- The Indian flute
- Autotune
- Superproducers (Scott Storch, B.Cox, The Neptunes)

I think it started with Hip-Hop/R&B duet songs being huge. Ja and Lil Mo, Ashanti, J Lo., Christina Milian
Fat Joe and Ashanti, Fabolous and Lil Mo, 50 copycat and Olivia etc

Then around 03-04 Crunk took over
Then 05-06 it was the snap movement
Then 07 was crank that everything
Then 08 Pop and EDM took over the charts
But Sean Garrett and Bangladesh
Rico and Jim Jonsin
Polow and Tim were still able to get hits
