When did you start working on this project, and how did you narrow down the originals and covers throughout this process?
I had a great team that I worked with. I started working on it about four months ago, and I just love the team, I love the take on how we were able to put our own spin on the classics and do some of the originals. It was just a great vibe and I just like the way it turned out. It all flows together nicely.
How do you exactly Brandy-ify classic Christmas songs?
You have to just have your own nuances and your own flavor and try different things, and I think that had a lot to do with working with great producers and coming up with different versions of how you can put your own spin on it.
What was your approach to writing original Christmas songs?
I had really great writers that I worked with. Sebastian Kole is just unbelievably amazing. I worked with another writer, India Carney, and we just put our minds together and tried to come up with a classic way of approaching an original song. I think a lot of the songs sound a little bit R&B, which I love. They don't just sound like Christmas records. They sound like something you can listen to all year round.
You have the duet with your daughter. What was it like recording with her, and how has it been witnessing her evolution into a singer in her own right?
It was so fun working with her, it doesn't even feel like work. We just love our bond and how we work together in the studio. We love the song that we recorded. We just thought the melody was so great. I'm just so proud to see her coming into her own and creating her own lane and really putting forth the effort to become the singer that she's always dreamed to be.
Have you always looked to her for her opinion on records?
Oh of course. I respect her opinion so much, and she's been such a fan for such a long time. So sometimes, when I get insecure in certain areas or lose my swag here and there, she helps remind me, "Mom, you can do it" and "This is great." She helps me in that way as well, so we all have our moments. It's good to have that inspiration and that reminder that you can do it if you put your mind to it.
How'd you go about picking which songs to cover on this album?
I love the songs I chose. I love "Christmas Song," "Santa Baby," "Jingle Bells," those are some of my favorite songs. I just wanted to do something that related to me and that I loved coming up. There's so many that I could have chosen, but those spoke to me so I wanted to do those.
What's your go-to Christmas record to put on around the holidays?
I'd have to say Mariah Carey's entire Christmas album. That's my favorite Christmas album of all time. Outside of this one.
Last year, you two did the remake of "The Roof," and she's the reigning queen of Christmas, we can all agree.
Yeah.
Did you ask or discuss with her about doing a Christmas project at any point to get pointers or direction?
You know what? I didn't do that. I don't know why I didn't, but I just didn't do it. I just got into my bag and did a Christmas album without asking Mariah for any advice. And I should have, because she's the queen of it. Maybe I just wanted her to talk me out of doing one. [Laughs]
Are we considering this B8?
This isn't the B8 album, no. This is "Christmas With Brandy," this is just my contribution to Christmas and how much Christmas means to me and that's all it is.
Is there a B8 on the horizon?
I hope so. I'm not going to stop doing music, but I would love to get into some new records in the future. But I just want to really get this out here and see how people feel about this record first.
You recorded "New Moon" for Audible, but have you considered writing an autobiography or a memoir?
I've thought about it, absolutely, just over and over thought about it. Maybe that's something I will get a chance to do in the future, because the Audible "New Moon," it just felt so natural to tell my story and parts of my story. I would love to maybe one day give a full thing on that. That would be a great opportunity.
How do you plan on celebrating the holidays?
I'm going to be working during the holidays. Hopefully I get Christmas off to do what I normally do, spend Christmas at my home and my mom cooks and we get together and just have that family quality time. Open up gifts. Hopefully that can happen if I'm not working.
You're performing at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. How do you prepare for something like that?
You just practice over and over and over. You try to get through the nerves before you get there.
You still have nerves at this point?
Of course. Nerves mean that you care, so of course I still have nerves. You want to do great and you want everything to go well and people to love it, you want people to connect with you. So of course nerves come. I would be nervous if I didn't get nervous.

This is cute. She said she's working through the holidays, is that for that film?

I'm thinking a film. It seems per her answers and not saying B8 is on the horizon that Brandy is going full on acting. That's good thing though. It's time for her to get as much acting money as she can and accomplish her dreams bc a lot is changing for actors.

I think it's perfect considering how the Christmas album is more than just a cheap holiday album.
And the film must be different from the A24 film right? I thought that one finished filming

Yes, it must be different film bc all the films that were announced for her have concluded filming.
With the strike over there's going to be a plethora of casting announcements that were just sitting.
Counting down the hours to get into that Brandy Christmas album, it has been a long time coming

I imagine she's just limited because of her work schedule right now, and I'm guessing they didn't do things ahead of her now work schedule, but even that could be a scheduling thing as she just started working on the album months ago and now it's being released.
She has enough unreleased material to put together a B8 I'm sure and her team needs to get on it ASAP. Happy we're getting the Christmas album though.

As she embarks on focusing more on acting I hope it clicks with her that in order to thrive at the box office and viewership she has to appeal to non-fans/expand her audience so a communications team that will keep her visible is needed.
I don't like the B8 answer. I would had rather got the b8 album first and then maybe the Christmas album. Yeah no new album from her for awhile smh
Cool lil interview.
B8 is done and ready to go too I'm sure.. she's just selling "Christmas With Brandy" right now so it's not yet time to talk about B8 and there's likely NDA's about it still ... I also think with how fickle the industry is and how must she loves her fans she's learned better then to talk about things before they are so far down the pipe that you can't turn back.
It is interesting that her first album on a new label is a Christmas album. You would think they would want a regular album first

It explains the lack of promo. Now we just wait for the exciting press release for whatever project she will start filming next month. So many castings are about to be announced and deals finished with the strike over.
I bet B8 is Halfway if not fully complete at this point. Brandy signed with Motown two years ago at this point and if y'all remember she's had writing sessions and been recording since then. Don't be surprised if we get B8 this summer or around the time brandy gets her walk of fame star.
At this point, I doubt there's even a music video coming tomorrow if at all
:damselindistress: The lack of promotion for Brandy's very fist Christmas album is mind blowing to me. However since it's releasing in such a decent amount of time before Christmas I'm assuming that it gives them plenty of time to build it up. I just would imagine they would want maximum first day sales? Idk I'm so confused about this rollout. Like is it a big deal or not. :shannonsmissing:
This is ridiculous honestly.
I don't care about any of this mess just put out the music and perform it a few times
She's already legendary whether this sells or not
I thought her deal was a partnership deal where she records at her own leisure, own her masters in the process, and Motown acts as her distribution but it's all under her imprint Brand Nu Inc.
Or does she have the traditional record deal?

Motown is just her distributor like eOne was. She likely signed a 1 album distribution deal with Motown because it was only a 1 album distribution deal with eOne or maybe she renegotiated it to be a 1 album distribution deal after deciding she wanted to work with Ethiopia/Motown as her distributor.
Bran Nu is listed on the back of her Christmas album so she's still an indie artist.

The Motown CEO Ethiopia left the music group last December.
Ethiopia per the announcement article was the reason Brandy wanted to partner with Motown.
Motown then got merged with Capitol.
She came to Ethiopia for a parternship.
Ethiopia leaving Motown/Universal Music Group was unexpected, so Ryan and Brandy likely decided to fulfill the contract via the Christmas album.

Another 3-4 years
No surprise regarding B8. I hope that she feels inspired to begin recording B8 during the spring or summer of next year. I really want her to hone in on this grown, sexy and simple style.
In the meantime, rent an Airbnb and record a simple video serving looks to one of these Christmas songs. Hopefully that's in the works.
She was recording songs back in summer of last year and october of last year. What happened to those?
It wasn't for the Christmas album.
Brandy's lying.

Its bizarre that similar scenarios happened with each of Afrodisiac, Human and Two Eleven.
With afro management changed, Human, the original president who signed her left halfway through the album campaign, and Chameleon left RCA to sign with Epic.

Brandy said this for the press release of the partnership back in June 2022.
"I've always wanted to work with Ethiopia [Habtemariam, Motown's CEO and chairwoman]," says Brandy. "I've just always thought that she was just a bad-ass Black woman who loves music, knows music, and I saw her work her way up because she's so talented. So when I heard that she was who she is now at Motown, I was like, 'If I ever were to go back to a major label, I would want to work with Ethiopia.' And it happened."

It sucks that she couldn't get to work with her for a long time.

she knows what's next, I don't hear any of the confidence she was giving this time last year. It's not giving Legend.
And as for "waiting to see" how this album does, and deciding if another album is coming based on that - Brandy is too goated for that, it's like she still stuck in this 90s mentality where she needs a major to do everything for her. She could really release several eps, an album, a mixtape. Idk what the hold ups are. Especially since she doesn't seem to care much about the presentation anyway. If you're gonna drop music and then have no promotional campaigns or anything then just drop music consistently. What are all these strategic releases for if there is nothing to push them? Doesn't make sense.
