I mean, commercially he definitely was bigger than 50 and Jay for those 5 years he was hot.

Now if we're talking about rapping, then no.

But we gotta start giving our Black artists their due

Nelly was one of the biggest crossover successes in music in the early 2000's.

Nelly had a bigger commercial peak but Jay has had more longevity and has been pretty consistent with his album sales.

He sold around 3-4 million every album iirc.

Nelly's first album went Diamond and his second went 7x platinum. He fell off after Sweat/Suit.

Jay-Z was just more consistent with his releases and maintained longevity.

But he didn't sell 3-4 million albums every album he was a steady seller though. Maybe with streaming now factored in he's do re-certification.

5,299,000, "Vol. 2...Hard Knock Life"
3,345,000, "Black Album"
3,093,000, "Vol. 3...Life and Times of S. Carter"
2,608,000, "The Blueprint"
2,521,000, "Dynasty Roc La Familia (2000 -)"
2,069,000, "The Blueprint 2: The Gift and the Curse"
1,934,000, "Collision Course" (with Linkin Park)
1,514,000, "Reasonable Doubt"
1,510,000, "Kingdom Come"
1,412,000, "In My Lifetime, Vol. 1"
1,131,000, "American Gangster"

Even though Nelly fell out commercially, he still rounds out in the Top 5 Best Selling Rappers list.

Quote50 Cent is the sixth best-selling rap or hip-hop solo artist of the Nielsen SoundScan era. He has sold 16,704,000 albums. The top five are Eminem (45,160,000), 2Pac (29,235,000), Jay Z (29,179,000), Nelly (21,815,000) and DMX (17,124,000).

well 2-3 million per album. Close enough.

Still good. Consistency > big peaks and falling off.

Yes consistency is most important but consistency wasn't Nelly's point

I don't think he meant lyrically, at least I hope he didn't  :dead:

But he was really popular. Didn't his first album sell like 6 million copies? And they used to wear that country song he did owt over here.

10 million for his first, 7 million for his second, then 4 million for his third/fourth

Nelly didn't have the consistency that the other rappers he mentioned had over an extended period of time but he's was speaking about that specific time and how they all had to essentially compete with each other. He wasn't talking about talent/ability.
