Someone please explain why y'all go up for this album.

The only songs I fully use are Who I Am, Focus, and Should I Go.

Afrodisiac, Who Is She 2 U, and Talk About Our love are okay, but they're my least favorite run of her singles.

After how inspired the production on Full Moon was, I found Afrodisiac subdued, samey, and fairly boring. I don't feel like Brandy even slightly challenged herself vocally here.

Tell me what I'm missing.

I used to feel that way at first, until I listened to it again. I felt like John Frusciante from Red Hot Chili Peppers. I was actually high one night as a teenager playing it back and it really gets you thinking about some deep, introspective heavy shit. Especially with what I was going through at that time.

If you dnt get it then dnt force yourself to get it...it may hit you one day but STOP comparing it to Full Moon b/c u will never understand it. This was Bran in her warm, silky, funky and dark progressive r&b. Everything is not about a big vocal, especially when it comes to Bran....its the tone, layering and feeling with Afro

Its so annoying but expected at this point....but, this is a big anniversary for us to not get anything. I wish Atlantic had a re-release on vinyl with those overseas bonus tracks, unreleased photos etc

It's very lack luster of Bran's team to not acknowledge it on social media or even package a vinyl release or work with Atlantic to release a deluxe on DSPs with Sirens, LIWY, and Noddin Off

Afro is such a gem.

The vocal on I tried is angry which gets the lyrics & production through to the listener.

The way that she sings Necesary in a convicted way is chef kiss. Focus & that breathing.

Finally
Come as you are beat

Brandy is such a talent but is so frustrating that she loves to act like this album & non-debut/nsn/full moon albums don't exist.

She really doesn't want to preserve her legacy bc she should have been doing what Mimi & others do to preserve her legacy by reissuing albums & unreleased music to introduce them to a new audience.

By FAR her best album. It was nice to have a Brandy album with meaning and that related to her. She understood her voice this era too. The only thing I would have changed was the forced sexiness in the Afrodisiac visuals. Video and artwork.

Brandy won't ever fully accept & discuss albums 4-7.

She doesn't have that Alicia Keys & Mariah in her to recognize that new generations come up so as an artist pushing your full body of work extends your legacy.

The OGs get this too. That is why Dionne, Chaka & many others are reaching a new generation.

Focus & Necessary deserve their time to shine.
Come as you are best alone would appeal now.

For me, it was the switch-up of working with hotter producers like Timbaland, Ye, & Organized Noise. She was finally giving more "organic, raw, hot, mature" album vibes. Brandy has always been so safe and comfortable until that era and I lived! I loved TAOL when it dropped it was so on point with the new wave of Ye shit at that time. The video/making the video was everything

And honestly, her topics were deeper and her voice sounded more rich and raspy. Like I wish I could go back and listen to WIS2U, I Tried, WYWB, Focus, Come As You Are, Finally, and Should I Go for the first time... I was stannin and she sampled Coldplay?! You couldn't tell me she wasn't bout to have a Confessions moment too that year. But the rollout post-TAOL was disappointing. She should've given dark and moody down. And she needed to keep that tig ol bitties baby weight she had at the 02 VMAs if she wanted to give "sexy"

"I Tried" should've had a theatrical Hype Williams video and ran TRL/106 countdowns on some Ashanti Rain On Me shit. She needed a solidified bop as "Come As U Are" (maybe with a 50 or Lloyd Banks feature) for Hot 97 and Urban Radios to eat up during the summer. Put out "Where You Wanna Be" for the fall for some smooth vibes especially with Ye being on fire. So many missed opportunities but she did bring in a new wave of fans and respect especially those that were missing that Aaliyah-esque sound with the R&B girls

It's really annoying af tbh. This is my favorite album of hers and what actually made me a stan. A simple post at minimum would've been cute, she acknowledged it for the 18th anni...
I hear this all the time, why? What was it that made it official.  I had the opposite reaction being fan since her debut I was not feeling this sound in the beginning.  I hated the videos and her look. It took awhile before I started to enjoy the album.

Quote from: Harlem on July 01, 2024, 12:44:32 PMDidn't Timbaland post during the b7 drop, highlighting her video of recording Borderline?!
Yes!  And was under her post trying to get the studio with her before the album dropped.

You're right. I agree with all of this. Love the ideas about the features and the single choices. I felt the same way.

I feel much more different about TAOL today. Not that I ever hated it, it just didn't scream first single to me that was my issue with it.

I definitely agree about her weight too! And I wish she toured more around this time, it would have helped with capturing her new growing audience.

I just read a thread on X about how she transitioned into this era. And people claim she didn't do a good job compared to her peers, I disagree it was just too low key.

I think it wasjust awkward with her image overall. Brandy was sexy ass hell after her pregnancy she should've kept that weight in that thickness similar to how Keke is doing it today. The Vibe and King cover would've ate down with that weight. I felt she was too skinny tryna give "sex" and it ain't click with us

Also - Laurie Ann wasn't the best choregrapher for her at the time. She needed Fatima someone who she worked with in the past but had experience in making Timbaland songs come to life with dance. And she needed sexy female dancers to back her up too

Alllll of this! It's my FAVE Brandy album still. The progressive moody R&B was HER lane and she was carving It by herself. She was just inconsistent in so many areas. No tour. Second single was a bad pick. Wrong time wrong choice. She could have milked this album.

To be fair she was slated to tour with Usher but that abruptly changed. I'm sure the "scandal" has something to do with that.

She was scary thin. I wonder how did she size down so quick because the summer before she was looking healthy and sexy in 50 Cent Stunt 101 video. What happened?

I agree with you her team was missing hip female creators. Laurie Ann did no wonders for Brandy. Those dance moves were very awkward. So yeah we needed Fatima.

Since this was supposed to be her coming out party as a woman. I expected a bigger push to connect with her female listeners in her styling, single choices, life experiences, etc.

I think she's still suffering today from solidifying a strong core female audience during this time. I personally think woman listen to music differently than men do.

@Detatlantavibes Milked! Do you hear me? The album was so good we could've gotten 8 singles. Tons of radio remixes. I'm sure if Brandy knew better back then she would played her cards differently.

Who I am, Afrodisiac, Say you will, and Finally are also great songs for female listeners.

Back to the topic, I don't think it's ever too late to put out a special edition vinyl with remixes or bonus songs.

It sucks she or her label doesn't celebrate her landmark anniversaries but it is what it is.

Here's to hoping something transpire for debut's 30th Anniversary. September is a huge month for her - The Front Room and her Hollywood Star.

I didn't know her star ceremony actually had a date. Smart to schedule it with her film I won't be able to go though. I will have a busy September.

We always look for these amazing big moments that either dnt happen or happen but Bran and her team dnt line them up right/milk the moment. Afro is 20 yrs old and it was the same thing happening back then as it is now......they flop the moment, the look, the album, the videos, the promo.

I hope everything will come together by September and the promo will be astronomical and Bran will have a lot of things to celebrate her self-titled/star but we will see...I won't be getting my hopes up.
