QuoteTyler Perry is shutting down criticism of his films from "highbrow negroes."

During a recent appearance on the "Baby, This is Keke Palmer podcast," Perry addressed criticism he's received over his films amid negative reviews of the recently released Divorce In The Black.

"No, no, no, no, no, you gotta drown all of that out, because if you let somebody talk you out of a place that God has put you in, you are going to find yourself in hell," Perry told podcast host Keke Palmer. "I know for a fact that what I'm doing is exactly what I'm supposed to be doing, because for everyone who is a critic, I have thousands of — what used to be — emails from people saying, 'This changed my life. Oh my God, you know me. Oh my God, you saw me. How did you know this about my life and my family?' That is what is important to me."

"A large portion of my fans are disenfranchised, who cannot get in the Volvo and go to therapy on the weekend," he continued. "So, you've got this highbrow negro who is all up in the air with his nose up looking at everything, then you got people like where I come from, and me, who are grinders, who really know what it's like. Whose mothers were caregivers for white kids, and were maids, housekeepers...beauticians. Don't discount these people and say their stories don't matter. Who are you to be able to say which Black story is important, or should be told? Get out of here with that bullsh*t."

Perry's comments come after his film Divorce In The Black received a 0 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Divorce In The Black star Cory Hardrict dismissed the low rating and praised Perry for his work.

"I don't know nothing about it. I didn't see that," Hardrict said. "I mean, the people love the movie and we do it for the people–that's who I do it for. If the culture's rocking with it, it's all love. So it's fine. But as long as the people see it, my neighborhood see it, South Side, Chicago, L.A. see it, everybody see it, then I'm happy, it's all love."

"Shoutout Mr. Perry, I love Mr. Perry, though. That's my guy. He takes care of his actors, it's a loving set and we're gonna do it again," he added.

I believe Tyler is super sensitive about his work. And with good reason.

He's missing the point though. He has made movies for two decades and hasn't shown any artistic growth.

You have the audience why not take advantage of it? And make it worthwhile?

Completely missed the point.

The people are saying you are Tyler Perry. Despite your samey ass movies and apparently limited creative scope... you are a mogul with xxxxxxxxxx amount of resources. There's no reason your movies are always giving this. No one said alienate your core audience, we know you made a fortune pandering to those "low brow" folks, but don't they deserve to acquire new tastes? See bigger things? Dream through your visions? Or are you only focused on reminding them that they're lonely, angry, poor, divorced, abused, cheated on, etc? Why so complacent .... oh, the money. Arrogant with no artistic integrity. A person with passion for what they do always strives to better their craft. If not, put it in someone else's hands and pay them. He's telling us he doesn't want to elevate because he's not done easily impressing the easily impressed. I guess he's intimidated by the taste level and expectations of a certain facet of....classier Black folk? My audience is disenfranchised! Bitter! Ghetto! Let me continue to tell their stories! Boy I guess.

Eek he is one of those that low key pigeonholes the black consumer. This is how white studio execs think about black consumers as well. TP could really make classic black films, but refuses to because of ego.

Well if it ain't broke...
I mean it's probably hard to convince this man who is like a billionaire that his work is objectively bad. He's not going to listen until something he does flops

I think there are two issues:
1) There need to be more Black people controlling media and producing stories about Black people.
2) The people who critique him (myself included) continue to support his project regardless.

We are in such a lust for Black stories and movies that regardless of how many times he strikes out, we will alway watch it.

Highbrow negroes

Meanwhile he knows he is exploiting his "disenfranchised" audience with these terrible, one note, mediocre films that offer no depth to tell the  stories of his target audience authentically without being a trope.

Plenty of other blacks creators witting better films about black struggle if that's what all you wanna focus on for eternity
