I don't try to act like I know much about the inner workings of the music industry, and I know a lot has changed. But, I was wondering why artists like Brandy and Monica (my favs) are not trying to capture a new wave of listeners by releasing more modern-sounding music. Summer Walker's new single is so Brandy-coded. So many artists in the 80s, from Tina to Patti to Dionne, got their second wind in their 40s and topped the charts. I know things have changed, but when I see Victoria Monet and Muni Long in their 30s getting their second breaks, it makes me realize that artists like Monica and Brandy should be able to do the same if they released, half-decent music. Is it because of their label situations, and if so, why don't artists like them invest in themselves? Is it really that impossible/risky?

you cannot compare them to muni or victoria. Brandy and monicas most successful days are behind them. Muni and victoria never had that level of fame or success in the past/ in their teens and twenties. Now they have seen success as solo artists in their thirties, but they will also decline eventually (after they peak and possibly sustain that for a while). It's very uncommon to be big after the success has died down for decades.
These people, brandy, Monica have been grinding since their teens they are allowed to take long breaks Chile...... and everybody is not Beyoncé.with the same work ethic. The newbies, muni, Victoria need to work so they can still be here and remotely relevant in 30 years.
The 80s was a time. I wish I grew up in that era.
The older ladies like Patti, Tina Turner, Aretha and Cher were landing huge number one hits in their 40s. Chaka too but she was in her 30s. We don't see that nowadays.
I agree with Bruce.
Just because you've been in the industry a long time doesn't mean you're done. Their vocals are still in tact and Monica looks better than ever. This isn't about taking a long break, it's about leaving a hole in the industry and ceding it to some raggedy bitches who get credit for sounding like you.
There are old school producers and new school producers that are making music that complements their original sound and updated versions of that. Even babyface is still around and sometimes we can't even tell he created the song because it sounds fresh. This is old, but didn't he do "it's my party" for brandy?
People like Mariah never let the industry erase them, even after it was clear her vocals had deteriorated. I think the girls need to stop worrying about sales and just release the music

It was still about the music back then
Monica is still too scared about flopping to release her album(s)
It comes down to having a good work ethic and understanding the business of the entertainment business. Many vets are not business savvy.
Dionne and her circle seeing that they could use social media to boost her legacy which has now turned into her getting her flowers and the younger generations understanding how impactful she is to music was smart.
When you listen to Patti in interviews, it's very evident she understands business. The food business side of her has made her musical legacy known to younger generations.
Mariah is by far the most business savvy 90s artist. She doesn't play about her legacy. She keeps herself out there and the Christmas branding within the past several years is smart business financially and legacy wise. It has allowed kids that weren't born when she started her career to know who she is and ensures Mariah can continue to spend her career as she wants, promoting her back catalog.

very consuela coded :woohoo:
They have to actually release music for that to happen.
The way yawl describe my Queens is as if they've been under a rock and pop out every 10 years like Sade. :dead:
In the Last 4 Years From Brandy we've gotten 2 full length albums, a slew of collaborations and original music from TV shows, has been in 3 movies and a television series.
And that's all in the midst of a health scare back in 2022.
Monica has been independently releasing singles and Videos, has a slew of collaborations as well, has been rebranding herself on Social Media while looking better than ever, touring the nation non stop at the detriment of her own voice, Had a VH1 series that ran for 2 seasons, a Podcast, and more.
This is all while coming off the heels of divorce, dealing with personal family losses, vocal and bunion surgery, and personal health issues as well.
MANY from their day cannot say they are as booked as these Queens. And to be Grammy nominated in 2024 is really a slay. A testament to their timelessness.
The music industry is just not what it use to be. But, To be where they are 30 years later is simply amazing.
Oh &: 'Open Roads' and 'MDA' coming SOON

THIS!
People just hold them to Beyonces standards, numbers, and broken records.
I could care less about all of that. As long as they stay active as they have been, I'm satisfied.
In the last 10 years, Brandy Norwood has been active in music, television, and Broadway:
Music
Released her seventh studio album, B7, in 2020. The album's lead single was "Baby Mama" featuring Chance The Rapper. In 2023, she released her eighth studio album, Christmas with Brandy. The album's lead single was "Christmas Party for Two".
Television/Movies
Appeared on the eleventh season of Dancing with the Stars. She also starred in the reality series Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business from 2010–2011, and was a series regular in the BET series The Game in 2012. She also co-executive produced the TV series Zoe Ever After in 2016 and Queen in October 19, 2021–February 15, 2022. Descendants: The Rise of Red 2024. The Front Room 2024
Broadway
Made her Broadway debut in 2015 as Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago. She also reprised her role as Cinderella in the Disney Descendants sequel The Pocketwatch.
Norwood is one of the best-selling female artists in American music history, selling more than 40 million albums worldwide. Her biggest-selling album is Never Say Never, which sold over sixteen million copies worldwide.
This girl has been doing something every year. Yall are just not satisfied. Also, unfortunately, when it comes to black women in the entertainment business, the industry refuses to have more than on or two of then dominating at once. That's just how it is.

Do you think its 2021? Cause u said in the last 10 years but mentioned shit she did in 2010 & 2011
It also has info that dates back to 2015. She has been active every year since and even before that.

Monica's "Friends" did well on YouTube (25 million views) but she just abandoned the song. She did one social media post - a lazy lip synch to her own song :dead: . These younger girls like Coco Jones, do challenges, they sing the songs on live, cover other songs live and keep themselves relevant. They are constantly putting out music content and while Monica takes photos.
I just wonder why singers like Monica don't use social media to promote themselves as musical acts. Karen Clark Sheard does a much better job. I just think these 90s singers very disconnected and. I think they are missing an opportunity to really solidify their legacies as musicians.
Honestly, Brandy doesn't need to release another album (just yet at least). What it comes down to is that she doesn't bank on her cult following.
If she focused on the missed opportunities that fans are still pissed and crave for like the 'Full Moon' & 'Afrodisiac', shit even 'Two Eleven' eras she'll have a little something with that. Ppl love Brandy b-sides and deep cuts but she doesn't rely on it as much as she should and that's problem #1
Also, she doesn't bank on the mega success of 'Never Say Never' as it should have her touring alone like Lauryn does with Miseducation. The 20th & 25th anniversaries of NSN were missed opps. BET should've had specials and all of the above but it takes a good team to recognize all of it
2 albums in over a decade...
Brandy really is ok yall. She is literally a part of all the SINGERS conversations in interviews.
Her legacy is absolutely solidified.
Should a Monica be opening for Nicki Minaj?
It's kinda sad to me :'(
Brandy has been active in the last decade
I think the problem is she's not consistent in making the music we actually want to hear as fans and the visibility of the music isn't consistent...we get it in pieces. The Christmas With Brandy album is great...why isn't she re-releasing it or at least doing a new promo run to make it more known...why even submit it for a Grammy consideration if you had no plan to center a campaign around it
Most of her time is doing films and movies we have no real interest in. If Brandy wasn't in Queens, The Front Room, etc I would never care to watch.
It's great that Brandy is multi-faceted. All of the acting stuff she has going on is good for her. I just don't care much about it tbh.
I'm here for the music. I don't even need a roll out. Just drop the mess on Apple Mu' and let me get my life.
I'm happy she is booking roles but the projects have all been duds... :dead:
I do think some of these roles are stepping stones for her agent to pitch her for bigger and better opportunities...
Doing a Netflix, Disney, and a24 movies back to back expands her current resume regardless if we enjoy it or not. Shit even though Queens got canceled but the fact she can say she was leading a show on abc in the 2020s type dope
I just need Jordan Peele or Marvel to knock on Queen's door though
:stressed:

This is my entire point. Usher's career completely rebounded after his Tiny Desk performance. Monica did hers within a week or so of his but did hers from home :dead: . Like girl, the most important thing about tiny desk is being at tiny desk. People disconnect with it when its filmed at other locations. These small misteps really hurt them as artists.
Brandy has literally birthed this new generation of singers. Brandy would do millions of views if she just covered some of their songs. Imagine her covering Coco Jones, Halle, or Summer Walker. Aretha Franklin covered everyone from Adele, to Destiny's Child to Mariah's "Touch My Body".
It seems like these artists like Brandy, Monica, Toni and etc. want to be relevant today but they still move like its 1998.
Usher and his circle have performed an excellent career overhaul. It's a well executed plan. The herpes scandal had his music legacy be pushed to the back. Now the conversation since they put their plan into place has left his music being the forefront of people's minds mainly especially with the younger generations.
Even Cardi B during that time of those lawsuits went on a twitter rant defending him because the disrespect towards him was high.
The girls should get like Mary and just release the new music. Follow Mariah and consistently promote their back catalogs and do re-issues. While working on a way to have the younger generations know of their legacies so they can carry it forward.
Babyface talked about picking up on some things from younger producers and artists. Which helps his legacy be known to their demographics and pushes it forward.
