riding subways in an enclosed train car with someone who was clearly mentally ill (and behaving erratically) used to creep me out

To me they always just seemed dangerously unpredictable.

I always felt bad about thinking that way but I feel like more of these instances being caught on camera/reported has justified my thought process.

Just Avoid the subway if you can. There's really no need to take it unless you actually live and work in NYC. If you're visiting use Uber to get around

NYC is still a great place to visit and experience. Just be smart about how you're moving around . Especially as someone who may be easily detected to be a foreigner/visitor. And I think that goes for most major American cities.

Always look like you know where you're going. Even if you don't . Vvvvvvv

anti-immigrants are gonna have a FIELD DAY with this one

not him being a migrant from Guatemala who came to NYC in 2018

there's been a lot of conversation about the "migrant crisis" in NYC and people claiming they're dangerous.

not the most gruesome and bold crime in the subway system to date coming from one of them.

no sane person does what he did to a sleeping, innocent person

Oph hun does it really matter why a woman who was burned alive wasn't reacting the way we think we would? Whether she was on drugs, half dead already, or what the fk ever else we can think of, that part of the story literally doesn't matter.

I said a young CHILD shouldn't be given a life sentence , so clearly age is the difference here.

And even with that I didn't agree death penalty should be given to him

Because there could POSSIBLY be a mental health thing going on .

Possibly. Whereas in the other case of a child, the age wasn't something that could be debated or needed to be confirmed.

Naw. You've also given "mental health" a pass. ANY MUTHAFUCKA that kills any other living person has a "mental health" issue because no one in their right mind is doing so.

Even those who premeditate and execute plans to get insurance money etc.

Not everyone who kills or hires to kill is insane.

Honestly, if you have to ask this question you are better of staying home any way. More pedestrians die crossing the streets in NYC then are killed on the trains.

The number one rule anywhere is to be alert. RIP to the lady, because I'm sure there are circumstances beyond her control that led to her being sleep on the train. However that is a huge no no!

Just because people do something, that does not make it right! Especially for a woman, falling asleep on the train could be dangerous. When I say circumstances, I mean people who are coming home after a long day of work and may just be tired! But if you were driving from work, you will stay up, and the train is no different.

I get that you like to be disagreeable, but this person asked about how to stay safe, and the number one rule anywhere is to stay alert. Being in a deep sleep in public is the most non-alert thing you can do.

Yeah. She was a druggy sleeping on the train and was dumb for doing so. Her life was a mess but she also didn't deserve to be set on fire bnnncxnx

a lot of people actually make their work commute part of their sleep schedule

Especially in the mornings

Fnfnnfnfnfnfnfn and especially if they're lucky enough to grab a seat

So I see what Oph means. It's def common

But personally I wouldn't do it . Intentionally at least. But Sometimes people are so tired they can't help but to find themselves dozing away.

If I see someone deep sleeping on the subway I just assume they've had a super long day/night.

Our bodies can kinda PUSH us into a mess especially when it's demanding rest. So I don't judge them

But tourists who are just frolicking around the city on vacation shouldn't really be sleeping on the train . If you plan things accordingly there would be no reason to

She's been identified by name. Debrina was a homeless woman

This pic circulating is allegedly hers

Was yanked from a yearbook of woman being listed as "Debbie kawam". If the yearbook pic is real I'm sure that's her. How many "deb kawams" could there possibly be.

Bvbbbbbbb very interesting surname

Well here's where you're wrong.

I never said she had a "dream" to be homeless. She CHOSE to be sleeping on a train instead of getting proper help. It's what she chose to do. Yes, she should have never been set on fire, but there are dangers of doing it like being murdered in your damn sleep.

SHE MADE DECISIONS.

I Made decisions to go to school, get myself into a great career, buy a house and live a healthy lifestyle. I COULD have chose to not finish school, get involved in drugs, make drugs a priority, sleep on trains and not get help.

Decisions. She chose. It was sad, but she chose it.

There are so many ways to get help. A lot of homeless folks CHOOSE to stay on the street instead. The reoccurring theme here is CHOICE.

I Made decisions to go to school, get myself into a great career, buy a house and live a healthy lifestyle. I COULD have chose to not finish school, get involved in drugs, make drugs a priority, sleep on trains and not get help.

Decisions. She chose. It was sad, but she chose it.

Omg. Look at you! So proud of you!

Do you know that it's harder to make conscious and informed decisions when you have an addiction and are constantly intoxicated? Do you know what decisions she made in her life that led her to this point? What if she was abused by her dad, drank to cope with it and was never able to escape this toxic dependancy? Your stable life is one accident, mental health break, pychological condition, misstep, toXic relationship away from falling apart. So get off of your high horse.

yes we make choices that lead to certain outcomes. But alot of choices are not conscious choices for alot of people. And nobody chooses to become an addict. And if you really think that the average homeless woman likes to live on the street, you are delusional. If it's not being set on fire, sexual assault and rape is a daily challenge that women on the street have to deal with.

You lack empathy.

I never said she had a "dream" to be homeless. She CHOSE to be sleeping on a train instead of getting proper help. It's what she chose to do. Yes, she should have never been set on fire, but there are dangers of doing it like being murdered in your damn sleep.

This is such an ugly way to center yourself. I find that most people fall into 3 categories:  they were raised with fully supportive families that did their best to nurture them to be self-sustaing adults, they have families that didn't care much BUT gave them the autonomy to make their own decisions, or they have some form of severe trauma as children that they've been forced to navigate on their own.

You can't brag about what you've accomplished without also including the story of how you got there. The starting line is different for everyone, and if you don't know her story, you should show her some grace. The most accomplished people typically have very supportive families (i.e. Sonya and Brandy). There are hundreds of "Brandys" who were born to unsupportive parents. And no, Brandy would NOT be Brandy if she had grown up in a traumatic family that refused to recognize her talents.

Responsibility.

One easy word. At 57 years old, I will HOPE we aren't blaming mommy and daddy for allowing their child to make bad choices. This is when we take responsibility and grab hold of our lives.

Responsibility.

I love a good rags to riches story also. We love to see someone work from nothing to having a thriving life. Someone who worked hard to overcome their obstacles.

Responsibility.

This outlook is so unlikeable

It is. I've seen a lot of Black people who grow up affluent or upper middle class have these same types of views. They think that because their parents or even themselves have made it, they are so much better than people who are working through struggles they have never faced. People will choose to hate those who have real-life struggles rather than the capitalistic system that makes it hard for those people to get the help they need.

It has nothing to do about being "better" than someone else  :dead:

It's called "getting your shit together". There comes a time for it. Especially when you are 57 years old and you choose drugs over LIVING...

If y'all wanna support being a bum, go ahead. I won't.

you just exposed how you really feel about the woman who was burnt to death! You think she was a bum who valued drugs more than her life. You do realize addiction is a sickness btw right? Smh.

How did this discourse start?

What would it matter if she were a billionaire or homeless?

Someone just killed a CEO.

I'm trying to figure out how her life choices come into question about someone randomly murdering her? Are we blaming her for her death or something?

For the slow ones in the back:

Life decisions come into play because you decided to sleep on trains instead of getting help. Help WAS available to them.  They decided to no longer take the help and CHOSE this life. Yes, CHOSE this life. Read into her backstory.

I nowhere said that it was acceptable to set someone ablaze :dead:

If any of you are not familiar with how to deal and cope with people who have addictions, you need to do some reading.

The thing is, this is null when people get killed while they're awake, people kill CEOs of companies, and people with jobs also fall asleep on public transit.

All 3 of those facts make what you're saying about her life choices irrelevant. She didn't get randomly killed because her life choices led her to being asleep on the train this particular day, in the presence of this particular guy.

Y'all have low standards

Let's run an experiment. I will sleep in a home with 4 walls and a door that locks for the next 3 days. Everyone else who thinks it's totally fine to be a drug addict and sleep on trains sleep on the train the next 3 nights.

We will compare notes after 3 days about our safety.
