Title: I almost reported my friend as missing today
Post by: Purple Moon on January 13, 2025, 06:54:47 PM
We were supposed to meet for lunch today, he wanted to text me today around 11 am to set an exact time (we agreed on that last night). The day passes and I don't hear from him. I text, call, IG DM, nothing.

I show up to his house after work to check in, nothing. It was honestly so out of character for him. Went with a friend to his workplace to casually ask if he's in tonight (normally he's off mondays) and just before that around 9:15 pm he responds to our texts: turns out he became sick overnight, slept the whole day and thought he had cancelled but was probably still half asleep so didnt actually press send.

This was such a rollercoaster of emotions. I kept wondering am I doing too much? But I feel like it's better to be safe than sorry, you also never know if someone is struggling with their mental health but hiding it, or they could even fall victom to a crime.

I'm still not 100% sure if I buy his story, so I just went to his house again to physically see that he was okay. That's all I could do for now as he didn't want company overnight. Just makes me wanna check in with friends even more

if it's a very close friend and I know them very well I woulda been very worried

Like my best friend not showing up to a planned meeting with no communication would def freak me out.

But if it's more of a casual friendship I woulda just assumed they flaked.

Sometimes ppl make plans and they just don't feel like goin anymore when the time arrives. Bmnnnnnnnn  I've been there. I'd assume most of have ...especially in ur 30s.

but it's kinda rude not to let the other party know . Common courtesy is a "hey won't be there, something came up" , even if it's a minute before.

Yea 100%, especially if we didn't finalize the plans or time yet, i wouldnt freak out with a casual friend normally.

However this is one of my close friends and I do worry about him sometimes. I just had a bad gut feeling and didn't want to sit here doing nothing, I do also feel very protective of him as he's still new to this country and doesn't have that many contacts.

He is fine though luckily!

You did the right thing. Follow your intuition and check on your friend!

Thank you! He got a bit upset the next day. But later he apologized and appreciated the concern. I also apologized for causing a stir when he was only sleeping peacefully (and for overstepping some boundaries) :dead:

It was the first time this happened, if this is becoming a pattern you can take some space..but I don't think you are wrong for being concerned and wondering if something is wrong

Yeah. I'm sure he liked your concern. But then you went BACK because you thought he was lying. That's...odd :uhh:

i already was close to his house and i had a bad feeling. Do you think people usually tell you they're suicidal (that was one of my fears) or do they try to cover it up? I knew it might be overstepping but I was willing to take that risk.

But I can tell it's all out of you caring for your friend :justabit: too much.
