I actually kinda feel bad for her, especially with that "grand opening" sign behind her
its clear a majority of her customers are Black Americans
and honestly i wish that Korean nail/beauty shop boycott got this much traction.
ive been SALIVATING to see the gorls get those bastards shut down and kicked out our neighborhoods for the longest
like this mess is actually blowing up and the gorls are going through with it

They need to have this energy for Asian beauty stores and other businesses they set up in black neighborhoods
Not some damn African aunties

we def should be seeing a vidya of Heu Hang Shoo Ming begging to keep their shop first and foremost

they been trying it for YEARS.
im kinda fuming that tea didnt get this kinda traction. and it honestly makes me ask other questions as to why this African thing is actually getting somewhere substantial in movement while the chink mess kinda flopped
i would love to say it's just because of Tik Tok but
imma just do more research before i start assuming the gorls may need to have a deeper conversation with ourselves
cuz ive def seen videos of Africans being pretty OVERT with their mess, saying Black Americans wouldn't know how to run business if they hadn't arrived. How about: You wouldn't have been able to arrive at all if Black Americans didn't push and organize to make sure people with that level of melanin would have opportunities and freedom here.
I might be aloof but I highly doubt much will come of this. I know you said it's gaining legs and I see the shop owner's plea, but I highly doubt the industry has much to worry about. This large scale boycott won't come to fruition for many reasons.
1) Black people don't successfully unite to boycott. Civil rights activists called for black to boycott Target a few months ago because it rolled back on DEI initiatives. I didn't do research or have data on the results, but from what I generally sense, that shit failed and Target wasn't phased. There was heavy hoopla about its plan but I didn't see much about its success.
2) Braid expertise, speed, prices and service availability. This shit will never work on a large scale. Not only will Faduma do the braids better, she'll tag in Neema to get it done faster. The guests have the freedom of being walks-ins ins and the prices will be very reasonable. Ja'Tavia might do good braids too but she'll need an advanced notice for next week, you'll have to pay the deposit online, she'll be slightly higher than Faduma was, and she's not splitting her coin so expect for it to be a solo performance and to be there all day.
I iust don't see it. This is the Africans' TERRITORY and combined with the perks I listed that the black shops don't have, this boycott won't take off.

well to be fair Target is Target...its gonna take a lot to put a significant dent in a business that appeals to and is supported by so many other demographics

QuoteIn May, Target said sluggish sales resulted from weaker discretionary spending, uncertainty about President Donald Trump's tariffs and backlash to its decision to roll back key diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

I'm pretty sure you will find FBAs talking shit about Africans too. There are stupid people in every segment of society. Launching a boycott because there are a couple of dumb Africans is wasted energy. All this will do is hurt black people. If this shit continues, the Caribbean gorls will get dragged in and then all the black will be boycotting each other. SMH.

of course there is a small segment ignorant black Americans still making fun of African people as if we don't originate from there too
im just speaking to why emotions may be running high.
And honestly this seems to have stemmed from black American women and their shared experiences in these establishments
So considering that I'm not a Black American woman who regularly visits African braiding shops and gives them MY MONEY...considering that I have NOT had or even witnessed many of these experiences firsthand ...
I cannot say "you're stupid for no longer giving them your money."
If that makes sense

not shocked that it has come down to this. my sister was telling me ab how there are african beauty company owners that have outright disparaged black american women. i think it sounds nice to claim that everyone needs to fall under the banner of race, but an ethnicity shouldn't have to turn the other cheek over disrespect. especially when race is a social construct. amongst africans they segment off based on tribes. wendy on rhoa was going through some tribal mess regarding her in laws.
outside of the beauty segment it has been a lot of dissing of black americans. porsha's ex-husband simon, kai cent, burna boy, and many more have been out of pocket. joe budden is a messy gorl but saw viral clip of him even saying it's getting a little too much w the disrespect towards black americans. he implied bts in the entertainment business many are even talking ab it.

this here
if this "we are all one!" thing isn't being reflected in how people interact with and treat each other in real life, is it even real?
dkvjnnsvdjnsvdjnsvndjnjsjjnv
there are plenty of people here in America who will correct others who call them "Black" because they'd rather be associated with their country/tribe back in Africa. which is totally OK.
but in the same sense, being Black American is kind of a tribe in itself. meaning: we have our own distinct history, language and culture. acknowledging this is not a crime, nor is it inherently divisive. it's reality and it is truth.

Flattening everyone into being "one" takes away from who everyone is.
It was social media discussion this month over Beyonce display of herself/Black Americans & the American flag.
That whole discussion showed that ethnicity is above all. BC BA aligned w her on that while non-BA weren't saying that "we are all one so she shouldn't be criticized for showing pride in her roots."
My sister was telling me how South Africans who are Tyla fans have been going on attack since 'Water' against BA women on social media. When Busta Rhymes was talking spicy about BA, he wasn't saying anything about "we are all one." Nigerians & Ghanians are currently messing. So I think it's so disingenuous when ppl start claiming everyone is "one" bc it's not how the diaspora & the world as a whole operates.

well one could argue shaderoom's african owner actually promotes and sets the tone for all the ignorance
the name of the blog in itself is evidence of that
and considering that, and the fact that theshaderoom primarily focuses on Black American celebs, it kinda lends credence to the grievances of the Black American gorls who have an issue with the African gorls. (the issue of "disrespect")
but i see ur point. if the gorls are to boycott tea, do it across the board. "pop the balloon" gotta go too

Africans do not hold enough power in the USA over our lives to be starting fueds and boycotting all of them.
Why boycott a whole group of people, anyway? That's just wrong. You don't know what the majority of these people believe. I can see boycotting one business. But a group of people based on race?
Black people need to get off social media. On social media, 2 people can be leaving a bunch of comments and making it seem like it's a lot of people when it's not. One person can even use multiple names.

i think this all stems from Black American women seeming to have a shared experience when visiting a lot of these African Braiding shops
there's so many situations where "not everyone!" can apply, even with racism . but when there's a collective experience so consistent and widespread that people come together in droves, we can no longer assume these are random, isolated situations.
there's definitely a disconnect somewhere that these women are not imagining.
now do i wish that i was watching videos of Hoo Wang Shoo begging for Black business instead and feeling hopeless?
Yeah.
But I'm slow to tell Black women how they should feel and what they should do. If they feel this way, they feel this way. i'm not sitting in those shops and experiencing what they've experienced.
