in retrospect a lot of the jokes were def a mess
always referring to her as some sort of animal, always referencing her "beady beads/naps"
the show has aged very poorly in that sense. if the gorls can HARP and HARP on Tyra Banks for everything she did on ANTM 20 years ago, call martin and those big ears to the carpet too.
the gorls are (unsurprisingly) in the comments gaslighting Ari
"never mentioned her skin tone!"
of course he didn't say anything like "darkie" or "burnt" cuz even back then, being that OVERT would have the gorls side eyeing you.
but i can't recall one time Gina got cracked on cuz of something like her natural hair texture. and i was an AVID watcher. the gorls can play dumb and/or be in denial all they want.
and to be fair Martin himself may not have even been fully aware of what he was projecting and promoting.
sdsssddsssss
This victimized gorl! This ultra-sensitive culture is exhausting
First, Pam gave it to him just as good as he gave it to her with the insults
It's what we used to call bagging or clowning back in the day. My group of friends, aunts and uncles all do some form of this.
They were two characters on a black show who did not like each other and provided comedic relief through just that! Period
If Martin offended or bothered you you need therapy
:dead:
Martin was literally making fun of Pam's "beady beads"
If someone who looks like Pam and has that hair texture gets offended or uncomfortable , how is that their fault?
He literally was making fun of things tied to her Blackness when no one else got those type of jokes on the show.
The black community as a whole "needs therapy" from the comments and outright dismissal I've been seeing.

i think the community could benefit from :
1) getting rid of this "all or nothing" mentality - where if someone does or says something wrong, they must be immediately "canceled" and thrown away. this makes people uncomfortable with the idea of even opening themselves to the possibility that their fav could have possibly done/said something that could have been harmful to someone else.
2) allowing people to have their own experiences. it's totally OK if one Black person is not personally offended by "nappy head" or "burnt crisp" jokes - especially if there clearly was no blatantly malicious intent in said jokes.
no one should really have to PRETEND to be outraged just for a tea. But to go out of your way to tell another Black person to STFU and damn near ATTACK them for saying they were uncomfortable with someone making fun of features they have to look at in the mirror every day is pretty fuckin WILD.
And this goes beyond emotion, this is simply logic and reason.
fro.... you gotta let people have their own opinions babe. if someone thinks she's doing to much, they have that right. no one is going "out of their way" babe
also, requesting your response be a brief succinct rebuttal as opposed to a thesis. luv u down 🫶🏾

just as the gorls are replying to Ari's experience/statement, i'm responding to their opinion on it with my own opinion. which we are all entitled to.
but it's kinda ironic you're saying "let people speak their mind" while cosigning responses that basically tell Ari to STFU and even insinuate she's mentally ill for saying anything.
hope that was short n sweet enough toots. luv u too

there we go.
It's ok for us to still love Martin and still love the show
While acknowledging that some of the shows jokes simply have not aged well.
Explicitly making fun of a Black persons natural hair texture isn't really acceptable. And for those who think it is I challenge you to ask yourself why.
martin (the show) wasn't colorist. i definitely believe ari has experienced colorism and watching a darker complected woman be fictionally joked on triggers HER experiences and that's why she's bothered, which is totally fair. but that's on you babe, not the show. you can't project that on to them.
This comment here is exactly what I was thinking .
People's reaction to Ari is TEXTBOOK "Girl shut your INSECURE ass up and sit tf down." teas
It's so typical and honestly infuriating.
Kinda sad that I must say these unambiguous Black women who are speaking up with Ari are BRAVE cuz they certainly risk getting the same treatment.

Pam wore her hair straightened. Which is in fact trying to get rid of her natural hair texture.
In this case beady beads or naps shouldn't be present which is why Martin would get on her about it.
If Pam was some character that was all about her natural hair and rocking afros all the time I would then kind of see a problem if he was making fun of the texture of her hair.
Not the case

. Bbbbbbbbbbbnnnnnnnnnnnnn
That was honestly a kii to read
and it's important to note that Ari is sharing her experience as a CHILD watching Martin.
she's not saying "oooh chile ..... i went back and replayed some seasons and FOUND some problematic mess to talk about!" (which still wouldn't be wrong)
so people aren't just dismissing her recollections as an adult Ari, but they are dismissing that little girl who was watching Martin and probably HEARD a lot of those same jokes Martin was using against Pam ...used against her in settings like school and even amongst family.
i 100% believe her when she says she felt discomfort with some of the jokes as a young girl watching the show
the woman who looked the most like her on the show was constantly called an animal and nappy head.
