Title: the spicy NY gorls migrating to the south
Post by: ATLien on March 17, 2026, 02:06:18 AM
there prob should be a pamphlet given to them advising them to drop certain words from their vocabulary

before gettin off that plane into historically Jim Crow territory

dfgjfdbhfghbgfdhbhbfgdhgbfdhfdghfdgfdhfd  :damselindistress:

the gorls are NOT gonna "understand" someone who they don't identify as Black saying it. especially not in the heat of an argument

the way Granmda MOVED out the way soon as it came out her mouth. she KNEW it was time for mess

I just deal with a situation like this.  My partners niece is dating a Mexico and we went to go visit.  His sisters boyfriends kept saying the "N" word.  You should have seen the way we kept looking around the room at each other  :fuming: He did apologize when he realized we don't roll like that.  That's why "we" shouldn't allow it period.

i think it's one of those things that can become a slippery slope

cuz there's so much diversity among Latinos

People like Cardi who are generationally mixed and Black identifying ....there are Black people who see her as Black/Afro-Latina but then there are Black people who see her as "other".

So she has some black folks SUPER uncomfortable with her throwing around "nigga" every 5 seconds in her songs while others don't have an issue

But I'd say for the most part "stereotypically" Mexican people usually don't pass as Black or black-descendant at all. They're mainly a mix of Natives and Spaniards

It's really the Dominicans , Puerto Ricans.....those with more African mixture that is visible many times that can really make this conversation of "who gets to say it?" slippery and tricky af

Unless the gorls just flat out say..."if you ain't of African-American lineage ... as in, you are NOT able to trace your family roots here in America where all this mess started - meaning your ancestors were NOT subject to hearing it, you can't reclaim and use the word."

I left during covid and moved to Cali for a bit. I didn't realize how exhausting NYC was until I left. It was amazing during my 20s, but now in my 30s, I could never... I get anxiety at the THOUGHT of moving back. I always planned to eventually return, but I just don't see it anymore. :dead:

Im in ATL too but im about to move again. DJSJDJSMDJSJDMNDNDNNSDNNDNDMD

I came for my internship placement. ATL is such a vibe, fun, and COMFORTABLE, I love it here.. but professionally there's really no growth here (at least in healthcare) unless you're in entrepreneurship. I've been interviewing in Boston, DC, and Florida, so we'll see where I land.

But ATL was the first place I lived that I wasnt comparing to NYC though. I just settled in and adapted instantly. It's the perfect balance of fun and EASE.

gor i prob beat ur ass on peachtree and didnt even know it was u.  :stressed:

Atlanta is kinda perfect cuz you def get that big city/urban vibe but its mixed with southern hospitality.

the biggest wake up call for me living here was although i always bought into Atlanta being the "Black Mecca", almost like it's own planet or island tea.....

when u actually live here and settle in you def get a reminder that this is still an American city, and this is still the deep south.

sfnsfjsjfnnsfjnsfjnsjsns

aesthetically it's still the Blackest city in America IMO
like the way it's decorated, the Black history everywhere here downtown....

i love it and i literally bask in it. :blessed:

but i realized that framing Atlanta a certain way kinda ignores the many Black people here who are struggling, the enormous income gaps/disparities, and even those who have been displaced by things like gentrification

so i've been very carefully intentional about the way i discuss Atlanta now, especially with those who are considering coming here and need to know what's tea

!!!! It's the black MECCA, an instant sense of belonging. But because of that, the opportunities feel kinda limited. ALL black professionals are migrating here. It's literally "overcapacity" like the natives say.

I'm a native FL, and I can tell you FL now sucks.  The politics of the state are becoming more Draconian.  The influx of MAGA coming here during COVID made things even worse. I live in SoFL and the traffic is insane and you better be learning Spanish to get a job if you are coming to Miami  :dead:

The only reason I haven't moved yet is because of my mom getting older and I want to be near her, and my partner has a job with a pension tied to us staying here

I'm from Florida too, Orlando specifically. And the only reason I'm not moving back to Cali is cuz it's just too far from family, my parents are getting older too. Florida, politically, is a fool but it has one of the best job markets and best homes. Preference is going back up to the north east, but I'm being open minded with Florida. Only Tampa and Jax though. I had enough of Orlando and Miami.

Florida sounds a FOOL on the news, but you dont see any of that in your day to day life. At all. People who actually LIVE in Florida know.

Especially with Orlando, Miami/SoFlo, Tampa.

I've experienced more racism during my brief time in California than I ever have in Florida. They're just passive and micro aggressive af with it. California is so fake progressive...

Quote from: FUCK Bey on March 17, 2026, 03:16:47 PMFlorida sounds a FOOL on the news, but you dont see any of that in your day to day life. At all. People who actually LIVE in Florida know.

Especially with Orlando, Miami/SoFlo, Tampa.

I've experienced more racism during my brief time in California than I ever have in Florida. They're just passive and micro aggressive af with it. California is so fake progressive...

All the racism I've experienced in Miami, comes from the Cubans/Latinos

Coming from Mississippi, I love living here in Atlanta. The last year in a half has been great. Don't really see myself moving back!

NYC is a such a beautiful bubble and melting pot to live in.
But I think economically -- you have to feel comfortable to enjoy it.

thats true too.

And economic "comfort" really depends on what ur standard of living is or has become

IMO to be "comfortable" in NYC, as in living a really good upper middle class life there, you prob need to be making at least 700K

And honestly I feel that number should be higher - especially considering taxes

Like enough coin to completely remove yourself from all the mess somewhere high up in a fab spacious condo

But it's def a state of mind. some people are living with roommates and watching WWE Live on the subway everyday and feel they have a "comfortable" existence in NYC

And if that's their perception, it's their reality
