Herb, what is the best site?

Ancestry DNA is the best ..
Their African breakdowns are much more thorough
(http://abload.de/img/kenya8w9sk3.gif)
But their native tea is flawed.
That's with all DNA compAnies though
Any native results will be most likely from South America... North American tribes have strict restrictions on providing their samples. Chiefs have forbidden it
So if anyone's looking to confirm if great grandma was Cherokee go the traditional route with ur research,..... Check censuses , records, etc.
they don't offer it for me.

No. Take the 23&me mess
Then u can get ur results from them
And transfer ur mess over to gedmatch for free
Which gives an even more thorough breakdown.
I know it sounds complicated but it's really simple

not only do u get a report, but u get cousin matches as well.
But I will always say , these things are a a good START.
And shouldn't be taken as the be all and say all. But they're pretty accurate.
However, nothing tops what you can uncover through traditional genealogical research via Census, birth records, etc.

it's pretty normal for Black people to be shocked and surprised when they see the European mess pop up, I can understand Loni's
initial reaction.
But the difference is, most people don't have an EXPERT in their face as they read the results, to let them know exactly where it came from. Which is some slavemaster forcibly entering your ancestor's vagina.

AncestryDNA and the Ancestry site are separate, make sure you're on Ancestry.com . I'm not familiar with World Explorer but I know with the US version it pretty much asks you for names, etc. You do have to know a bit of information to start with .... like I called my Granny up and got some names she knew, started from there...then you begin tracking back.
Do you know the names of the people you're looking for? And do they have spaces where you can enter it? Screenshot it for me lil sis maybe if I see what you're looking at I can be more helpful.

If you don't see in the test it does not mean she is lying.
If she is claiming that she has family from North American tribes....a lot of them are forbidden to offer their samples, so there's very little to compare your DNA to. Almost all of Native American samples come from SOUTH Americans that have been more cooperative in Mexico, etc.
Don't think she's a liar if you don't see it there.
The only real way to prove/disprove North American tribe association is to do your genealogical research. Look where your family lived (if they were on a Native settlement), and what their names were. If the heritage is close enough you should be able to find something through Census records, birth/marriage records, etc.
Go into your test results with an open mind. I'm excited for you.

Afro luv, how do I use the search database on AncestryDNA?
I have the World Explorer subscription but I'm not find anything :udontlookok: the guy from customer service explained that this subscription covers the U.S. and international. :ermm:
AncestryDNA and the Ancestry site are separate, make sure you're on Ancestry.com . I'm not familiar with World Explorer but I know with the US version it pretty much asks you for names, etc. You do have to know a bit of information to start with .... like I called my Granny up and got some names she knew, started from there...then you begin tracking back.
Do you know the names of the people you're looking for? And do they have spaces where you can enter it? Screenshot it for me lil sis maybe if I see what you're looking at I can be more helpful.
omm see this is the issue :plzstop: my family is so secretive :udontlookok: Like I don't even know my dad's birth name :uhh: Outside of my maternal grandfather's name I don't know anything. :uhh: I searched my parents names and their marriage license popped up and also the previous places they lived but that's it :bvy: I searched my grandfather and I only got a record of him living here in Texas back in the early 90's. I mean, I didn't know he was her that early on but I guess that's something. I will say tho last time I put in my grandfather's name it popped up that he was in states back in the 60's. I don't see it anymore when I search his name now tho :hmph:
I think I'm gonna have a sit down with my parents and some relatives cause I literally don't know anything :gorlonfire: I wanna be able to go back generations.

My friend @ work is facing the same dilemma. She wants to know more about her family but for some reason her family's real hush hush about everything lol.
You're gonna find a lot of value in the cousin matches that AncestryDNA gives you with the test. IT lists people who have taken the test who have similar DNA to yours, and it goes by estimated degree of relation...3rd cousin, 4th cousin, etc.
It's accurate as well. I've had a few people message me and they all were connected to my father in some way. :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: Like legit connected, they knew names, places, etc. only things people within my family would know.
Using that tool will help you learn more about your family. And you have your grandfathers name, that's not a bad place to start at all. It also depends on how many generations your family has been in one place, did they relocate a lot, etc.

and it was pretty cool interacting with my newfound cousins from my dad's side. i mean of course i know that's my ddy, but it's freakin cool to REALLY know this is ur dvy. thru DNA. especially since my mom's side of the family won the genetic battle when it comes to my appearance :plzstop: :plzstop: cuz u know wat they say...mama's bvy ..... :usureuok:

Yeah the cousin matches will be your best bet. Searching my family was pretty easy, especially on my mother s side because both my grandmothers father and mother were from North Carolina. So I easily glided back generations and discovered mess.
It's hard if you have a family of nomads. :plzstop: Especially since records aren't really kept for visits, vacations etc, I'm sure they have to account for who was where at a certain time and place, but I would imagine that it's not something as easily accessible as a birth or census record.
Get into the cousin matches bvy sis. It's gon be ur best bet. and your overall ancestry report may give you more clues of where to begin :ohwow:

It's not to be taken as the be all and say all. I encourage EVERYONE to do their own genealogical research in conjunction with a DNA mess. But it definitely gives you an idea, a very very educated estimate.

I was j/k. I'm just glad people are seeing the importance of knowing who you come from. I have to admit that my research on who came before me has given me lots of clarity and encouragement on where I am heading.
It definitely reminded me that just as my ancestors, I simply have a SLOT of time in the world. One day it will simply have my name with the date of my birth and death next to it. That is an eye opener and reminds you that no matter how great you are, you're not immortal. And highlights the importance of making the most of this slot of time we are allotted in the world.
My father's grandfather, in my signature, definitely left his mark, and things for us to discuss about him even years after his slot was closed. It's important that there's some cool things to say about me next to my slot as well.
I think that's why Formation has officially become my favorite song/video ever. It exemplifies fucking everything I have been feeling (and preaching LOL :dead: ) these past few months. :stressed:
Omffffff it really does sis!

that's the category they have which represents East Africa.
it doesn't specifically say "East Africa" , its more general. but its separate from their west and central african categories/countries.

AncestryDNA does not have a category that says "Ethiopia" or "East Africa". That's what I'm trying to get to you lil sis. :plzstop: So when you get your results, being that you have roots in East Africa, SE Bantu will definitely pop up. This does NOT mean you are Bantu.
This goes back to me saying it's all about knowing how to interpret the results. Just because it says something doesn't mean it's literal. The test is simply detecting the region where your ancestry lies.
SE Bantu is definitely separate from West African/Central African categories because it's rare that it pops up for African Americans (which have roots in West/Central), especially in amounts greater than trace amounts.
Remember, do not take the results literally. That's the biggest thing.
Here are a list of the categories that ANcestryDNA has:

North East Africans are like Latinos, not a real race. They are a mix.
Well in a way they are, because their tea isn't as synthetically made up with slavery and conquistadors and mess. But for the test, they are just a mix.
:mmyucudnvr:
So I guess they didn't get samples for Ethiopian, Sudan and the other northern regions :uhh: Wtf. This is weird because the SE Bantus didn't even migrate to Ethiopia or Somalia.

Don't think too much about it, just take your SE Bantu amount for those areas. It definitely detects heritage from that area, it popped up for that Somalian. :dead: She didn't come back with Ghana as her top result. :dead:
Remember, this is just the start, there's always GEDMatch, which breaks it down even more. And it's free of charge. Breathe lil sis.

But that Somali woman has 50% :plzstop: that is a lot for a Somali. So my guess is her dad or mom is either Kenyan or has Kenyan blood.

if the Somalian girl identifies as Somalian, and both her parents do the same I suppose (she didn't say that one of her parents are from another country or are of a different race...not that I can remember), then it makes sense that SE Bantu popped up in such a large amount. She shouldn't be surprised if she knows how to interpret the results. I don't sense that she was. If anything she was surprised with the West Asia and North African results.
People within the SE Bantu region are admixed with Middle East, North Africa, etc. it's a gumbo of mess. Categories like GHana, Nigeria, etc. didn't return those mixes within the samples. Generally those areas returned mixes from neighboring west african countries.
So that shows you how much of a wild card SE Bantu is. Don't take its label literally.
The same with "Native American". It may say NA, but most of the samples that AncestryDNA and all other DNA companies have are from SOUTH American countries. Which is why I say these tests are most useful in conjunction with traditional genealogical research, if possible.

the Somalian girl's GED match says 56% E African.

I never looked into or really thought about Native animal spirits and their meaning until I ran across my Uncle Badger during my research. But it made me more interested in it, and last week I ran across what the Elk means to the Natives.

Its eerily similar to how I feel about the Buck. I've had this chain since 2010 (years before ancestry was even something I cared about) and it always meant so much to me. Everyone always asked me what it means, Squid being one of them, last year I explained it to him.

it's just about properly interpreting the results. I think that's the biggest "rookie" mistake when it comes to these tests...automatically taking everything as it appears on the labels. "oh! I'm 20% Scandinavian!" (when it could be trying to pick up neighboring UK heritage) or "omfg I'm 35% Cherokee! and 15% white :wellheythere:" when it's trying to pick up on your Mexican heritage based in South America via "Native American" results, and your Spanish heritage in the Iberian Peninsula via "West Europe" results. :dead:
