The digital restoration and re-release falls on the 25th anniversary of the film.
Julie Dash's seminal Daughters of the Dust will be getting a theatrical re-release, with a new restoration.

The restoration and re-release falls on the 25th anniversary of the film, which centers on a family of Gullah women living on the Sea Islands and their decision to migrate to the American mainland in the early 1900s.

Daughters of the Dust has been widely credited as a creative inspiration of Beyonce's recent visual album, Lemonade. The historical imagery in Lemonade parallels Dash's period drama, which was the first feature film to be directed by an African American woman.

The Cohen Media Group's film collective, which maintains a library of classic films, has acquired the worldwide rights to the feature in the Fall 2016 and pioneered its digital restoration.

?I?m excited about the restoration of Daughters of the Dust is being made available to the public and delighted to have the opportunity to engage with a new generation of people who have never seen the film,? said Dash in a statement.

The premiere of this restoration will be held May 20, at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio. It will then screen at the Cannes Film Festival.
