Title: Ghana bans sale of all bleaching products in the country | Decolonization
Post by: SouravMay on May 31, 2016, 09:37:41 AM
http://www.theroot.com/articles/news/2016/05/ghana-to-ban-skin-bleaching-products-in-august/

Colorism, that which privileges lighter skin over darker, is an issue that not only affects African Americans, but pretty much all people of color around the world.

From India to Compton, Brazil to Belize, one of the ways in which colorism rears its ugly head is in skin bleaching. We have all seen photos where celebrities such as Dominican baseball player Sammy Sosa or Nigerian-Cameroonian pop singer Dencia bleached their beautiful brown skin to odd shades not found in nature, ostensibly for beauty and prestige. As far back as the 1990s, the Jamaican dancehall song ?Dem a Bleach? talked about the phenomenon of using chemicals to alter the color of brown skin.

But the West African nation of Ghana is putting the kibosh on that.

Face 2 Face Africa reports that come August, Ghana?s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) will ban the sale of cosmetic products that contain the skin bleaching ingredient hydroquinone, which has been linked to cancer.

Presented as a physical (not mental) public health issue, FDA spokesperson James Lartey confirmed that such products will no longer be imported to the country.

?Concerning skin lightening products, we are saying that from August 2016, all products containing hydroquinone will not be allowed into the country. From 2016, the acceptance for skin lightening products is going to be zero,? said Lartey.

No.
I hate that the actions of White people (majority) and society, have led individuals with beautiful dark skin feel inadequate. It's one thing to see it in the States, where there's mostly white people... and media outlets/films/magazines portray their mess...

But it clearly is spilling over to parts of the world where it's majority AA. And I've seen AA argue over skin tone and whose lighter, darker... it's just a mess. And needs to stop.

Very well could be self-hate.
But you can be AA and still get a tan. I don't see anything wrong with that.
But when you want to change your eye color, your entire skin-tone...
Put it this way, when I read that TWEET, the singer, hated herself because of her skin tone... ch... :uhh: She is the most beautiful woman and society did that to her. I'm sick of it.

Ghana has grander issues than skin bleaching. This won't be taken seriously nor enforced. n

I don't know that this would work. All Ghanaians have to do is go to Nigeria to pick some up. Or, Nigerians use this as a business opportunity to sell bleaching products in Ghana's black market. And, knowing Nigerians, some of those products will be counterfeit.

All of the bleaching products are actually produced and manufactured in Togo, Ivory Coast and in Congo. Nigeria are just the biggest buyers and redistributers, what they need to do is impose these new rules on THOSE countries instead. Cut off the supply

I hate how people award Denacia's rotten ugly self with 'first African female entrepreneur' crap when in truth it's this woman and she does the reverse
