Title: #HonestyHour: Do you think someone saying "You act white/black" is racist?
Post by: charlie. on May 31, 2016, 10:26:59 PM
FOR EXAMPLE: Telling a black person "You act white"
or telling a white person "You act black"

:uhh: let's discuss.

Cause my dumb ass friend is thinking this is a joke. I had to debate a bit.

Blacks are incapable of being racist. We are capable of discriminating so when statements like this get made by a black person I consider it ignorant,  bigotted,  etc.

However,  a white person on the other hand,  THAT's racist!

No not at all. But I can see how a person can find it offensive and derogatory.

So if someone said that to you... Then you say "what do you mean"

and they reply with something like "you don't like rap music, you dress white (which obviously their saying you're not sagging your pants, wearing snapbacks, hoodies), and/or you don't like chicken, you can't dance, etc."

what do you think then?
Cause that's basically the same thing... is it not?

Yes I do.

It's basically saying all black people are the same and putting blacks in a box. "You're not gangster enough to be black" I agree it's IGNORANT as well. But it's like it's an essential quality of the comment that makes it racist.

Saying it, I feel like that's taking away someone's identity away from them in a way like saying "You're not Zinc, you're Charlie."

you'd be like WTF  :uhh:

Most black people who claim they can't be racist don't ascribe to the basic definition, which is just the belief of being superior to other races. They reference the systemic, institutionalized definition of racism in which they have little to no power to deny other races of social, economic or other kinds of oppurtunities. So they define any bias they have as bigotry or prejudice, but not racist due to their position in society.

If you have a hatred or fear of another race, then you can be racist.

Racism operates the same on both a micro and macro level. The latter only being able to flourish because of the former. Racism (the oppression & benefit over others based on race), still is the same as it was in the past regardless of it being less overt and "institutional" now. :)

But then you must ask, where does the oppression stem from. If a race is victimised due to the fear and hatred from another race, that's racism. If you discriminate against another race because you feel your race is superior then, you are a racist, no matter what skin colour you are.

Anyone can be racist.

Let's use a mixed race person as an example.

It's moronic and ignorant to say that if they're targeted by white people, it's racism, but if they're targeted by black people, it's not.

The oppression would stem from the racial majority. That same majority would then use resources to exert bias in a way that benefits their group the most, and keeps minorities in check. Institutional racism would be at the macro level of society, and micro racism would be the lower level, belief model one.

In theory, you could say that a black person could be racist...but it really wouldn't benefit them at all because they don't have the same privilege of protection that others may have. Blacks who deny the capability of being racist seem to have an outer locus of control, seeing as they have to depend on other groups for positive outcomes in their lives.
