A Michigan lawmaker announces plans to introduce a "Uniformed Lives Matter" bill in the wake of the ambush on police in Dallas, Texas last week.
Five officers died, seven more injured in an ambush by a lone wolf Thursday night. The suspect identified as Micah Xavier Johnson, age 25, died in a standoff with police.
Republican State Senator Mike Kowall says his legislation will make it so attacks on law enforcement officers and emergency responders in Michigan are hate crimes.
Kowall a Republican from White Lake, released a statement Friday following the attacks on police officers in Dallas Thursday saying: "Last night?s cowardly, murderous attacks on Dallas law enforcement officers represents an unconscionable act of aggression. The brutal slaying of these police officers while they were attempting to protect peaceful protesters of the Louisiana and Minnesota incidents cannot be tolerated." Kowall says action must be taken to ensure a tragedy like Dallas does not happen in Michigan.
Kowall plans to discuss the legislation with fellow lawmakers, the law enforcement community and citizens. He plans to introduce the bill when the Senate reconvenes in the fall.
