I was listening to a random mix and was struck by how many artists wasted their potential. Either they are on their last leg, or it's truly over. They will never reach their full potential in terms of success. :fuming:
Lauryn
Azealia
LeToya
JoJo
Claudette Ortiz
Teedra
Jay Electronica
It wasn't JoJo's fault. Blackground really fucked her over.
Lauryn Hill IMMEDIATELY popped in my head. Lowkey, I feel like Brandy did too. She never shoulda took all that time inbetween releases. If she woulda really churned out the music in those earlier yrs, she would be SOLIDIFIED!
All of the above mention, plus Danity Kane
well Latoya seems more satisfy doing film....but at the end of the day alotta shady music politics goes on behind close doors that messes up the above mention and their labels weren't even fully behind some of those you mentioned.
I think Brandy wasted her potential after Full Moon and I'll leave it at that. :stressed:

Mess! I REALLY don't Think Of Lauryn as wasting Her Potential...How Many Other REAL Legends and Notables Have you Heard of with Only ONE Alberm? ?? I Can't Think Of MANY Others...Secondly, Fugee La' are Also Luminary!
I Just don't Think Lauryn wanted to be In that REALM! Sis used to CRINGE Winning 10+ Awards a Night at each ceremony!

Maya
Foxy
Rich Girl
Danity Kane
Tiffany Evans

Well if we are being honest I agree as well. The 4 year breaks should've been 2 the most. I feel like era's between full moon and Afro and one between Afro and human couldve have been SOLID! She was still on a major label who were willing to give her budget. I think Atlantic had changed after Afro. Had she taken the opportunity to use what she had before that she would've slayed!
Azealia was the first one that came to mind.
Usher
Kelly Rowland
Blu
Brandy
20 years in the game I think Ghan should be on her 10th album. I know there were full complete projects scrapped. :gorlonfire:

She's like 4
Idk if Jay and Bey want her in the industry
:plzstop:
Blu definitely wasted her potential
:hmph: Not really sure why Ghan's name is being wrapped into this bunch. She didn't waste her potential. She took breaks and decided to live life. And she's still relevant. :uhh:
Also, I think Teairra Mari had a lot of potential.

Brandy definitely wasted alot of valuable time. Lauryn Hill is still riding high off one real album and is still pretty iconic for some, doesn't change the fact that she squandered her fckn talent

She's a waste of talent...she didnt achieve even half of what she was capable of achieving....
Still hoping maybe ten years down the line she lands some breakout acting role and becomes a serious actress

True. But during the 90s a lot of artists took longer breaks. Usher, Toni, Monica, TLC, Whitney, etc. Mariah was the only 1 who was churning out albums like it was nothing. Brandy was also booked shooting a TV show and movies.
This sounds kinda bad but things changed for Bran when she got pregnant. The Full Moon got cut short n was not fully promoted. Then by the time she was ready to really comeback, Ashanti, Beyonce and Alicia were already booking and Bran was no longer the leading lady. Thats really what fucked up the groove. And Moesha was a big part of Bran's success. After the show was gone, her appeal wasnt as big.

I thought Nicole Flopzinger was gonna book, especially after I heard her on Timbo's Scream. She's one of the worst in terms of wasted potential.

My bad, i meant afro and human. I definitely feel like there was space for 2 additional cds in her catalog. Alot of those other artists that took breaks because they were having money issues and mess. I just dont think u should sit out so casually at the height of ur career. Sorry, but I'll always feel like she wasted time and opportunities
I don't see how you can say someone who was once a Covergirl spokesmodel and sold over forty million records wasted their potential :dead:
Brandy has def' made some mistakes but :ermm:

I was actually just thinking that.
A lot of these artists were bullshitted by labels and politics.
Jazmine Sullivan is one artist who kind of hold themselves back. It's vain but she NEEDS to lose weight. She is so pretty faced and talented too, but the higher ups ain't going to commit and invest in a size 20 artist.

Yeah I wouldn't say no where near.
Yeah I don't think Brandy wasted her potential. If anything she took advantage of an opportunity of a life time, ran with it and venture into other endeavors.
Def JAZMINE SULLIVAN.... She needs to be on Adele or even bigger level and that's real shit... I know ta not her fault but her labels... She should've won every Grammy for that debut album that year

Lauryn Hill
Amy Winehouse
D'Angelo
Lisa Fischer. My God, she was one of the best all-time vocalists. She had the credentials, singing background with industry greats. And she had the beauty. I think she could have dominated the nineties with Whitney and Mariah. She was THAT good.
I will NEVER, EVER get over the fact she only released one album, won one Grammy, and went back to singing background. :loose2when: :loose2when: :loose2when: :loose2when: :loose2when:
This is old but Jean Carn is one of the best voices from the seventies and eighties. Not sure how she slipped through the cracks and her name is not mentioned alongside Phyllis Hyman and Anita, but it's unfortunate. She doesn't even have enough to sustain an Unsung episode.
The way she killed Mystic Stranger alone. :omgwatshappening:

Yeah, Brandy was one of the biggest nineties stars. I wouldn't include folks like Her or Usher. They had success. Wild success.
I'm talking more about people who will either never blow up, or didn't really try after one album or so.

Soooo much potential was there. Back in the early 2000s, people were comparing her beauty to Beyonce's. She is gorgeous, has a pretty voice, and could have slayed the decade. She could have revived a career with R&B Divas, but no. :butim16robert:
Chante Moore...not sure what went wrong with her
Yes, D'Angelo. I just don't get it. He had everyone, including white pop fans, salivating after How Does It Feel. I guess it was too much pressure.
Jay Electronica was a complete waste. He had ALL this hype about ten years ago, all these industry co-signs. He never released an album, mixtape, or an official single. All he managed to do is knock up Erykah. :omgwatshappening:
