The Marvin Gaye estate claims Ed Sheeran?s song ?Thinking Out Loud? shares a likeness to Gaye?s ?Let?s Get It On,? and they want compensation.
It wasn?t enough Gaye?s estate won $7 million in damages against Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams, who believed their song ?Blurred Lines? was a rip-off of Gaye?s 1977 single ?Got To Give It Up.? Now they?re after Ed Sheeran, alleging he ripped off the melody, harmony, and rhythm composition from ?Let?s Get It On? for ?Thinking Out Loud.? Gaye co-wrote the song along with Ed Townsend, both of whom are dead, and now the owners of Townsend?s estate are coming after Sheeran.
Compare both songs below:
Last month, Sheeran was hit with a similar suit. Two songwriters, Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard, along with their publishing company HaloSongs, claim Sheeran?s ?Photograph? is a ?verbatim, note-for-note? copy of ?Amazing,? which was released by 2010 X Factor winner Matt Cardle.
They sound similar but I don't get copy cat vibes...what do you guys think? :ATLcameo:

Robin Thicke's song was a clear rip-off. This is reaching. That's like Fantasia getting sued by James Brown's ppl for Sleeping With The One I Love.

Fantasia openly says that her song is inspired by James
and has included the original in her set
This is a stretch. They just being greedy now

And even if she didn't state it, I'm sure they'd leave her alone. And I'm sure Ed is 'inspired' by a lot of artists too. Lets Get It On doesn't sound anything like Thinking Out Loud. That's way too much of a stretch.

Family members who appeared on ET earlier this week commented on the similarity of the two songs; Gaye's daughter Nona said she thinks they sound alike, but that as far as legal pursuit goes, "We're not in that space."
Well, that space is roughly a reality away anyway, because William "Smokey" Robinson wrote "Ain't It Peculiar" and has licensed it for recording to many artists, as anyone with a laptop and the link to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers website can tell you.

Well the song is different, so that sounds about right. Did u read further down into the rest of the credits :dead:
You list the original writers in the credits. They created the song. :uhh:
But no other writers were created anywhere. He stole it, hun.
Yeah Timbaland used alot of samples but never did credit them.
We Need A Resolution, I Care 4 U, More Than A Woman and Don't Know What To Tell Ya all were sampled from songs but were not credited.

!!!
My suspicion is that the original writers are dead on I Care 4 U, and their family never got a case together. It may have been a clearance issue as to why there wasn't time to include it on OIAM originally. But I don't know.

I think he got away with some songs because the parts he redid were so short. If it's less than a few seconds, I don't think it will hold up in court.
The WNAR sample is so cleverly done with just like 2.5 seconds, I'm almost not mad at him. :dead:
But MTAW was just an intro to the song.

Still love Tim though, but he tried it.
The Neptunes did alot of sampling too without crediting. Britney Spears sampled Vanity 6's "Nasty Girl"
Yeah, lots of these producers were sampling down. But then when that Truth Hurts song came out, Addictive, they lost every penny that song made and more. :kii:
i hear it a small theft is still a theft
this is why timbaland steals from ppul no one knows about in other countries lmao

I forgot about this one.
Paul was good at sampling. Be Your Girl, Winter '96, You'll Never Find, No More Tears, etc all contained old school samples, but were made fresh and polished. And all were properly credited.
He made a big mistake on that foreign sample for Dip it Low, though.
