Title: The divide between brown people and black people in the U.S.
Post by: hewritez on September 11, 2016, 10:53:45 PM
Has always bothered me.

As a brown person, it's really disheartening to see how many brown people just don't give a fuck about black issues. I see Latinos criticizing black lives matter all the time on social media. Indian people just don't give a fuck period.

It's crazy cause all of this stems from British colonization, where brown people were made to feel slightly superior to blacks simply because they were indentured servants rather than slaves.

I recently read Americanah, and there was a quote that stood out to me: "If you're white you're right, if you're brown stick around, and if you're black get back."

That mentality still exists today. I can't speak for other communities, but the South Asian (Indian) community is completely aloof. I know it's because we are relatively new, but it amazes me how racist they can be. They think that just because whites have accepted them (they love our yoga and chai and bindis and bollywood), just because they have relative affluence in this country, that it gives them some kind of power.

But minorities don't have power. Money doesn't buy power. It buys access to other people's power. Temporarily.

Sorry. Just a rant.  :dead:

So true and as equally disgusting. These same people will only want involvement when there is progress and they can directly benefit.

H

Yea. The "brown" gorls try so hard to separate themselves from blacks as if they're "above", but the white gorls don't fucking see it for them either. That's the KI. :dead:

But honestly... That's what the whites want. They want us divided.

Asians are a different story..... They are so white washed that it's disgusting. Changing their names n ALL.

it goes beyond who you fuck with though.
what's infuriating is that this division was created by whites, and for a reason.

Divide and conquer, as they say.

The aloofness is there with all racial groups from what I've experienced not just brown ppl.

true i just categorize anyone who isn't white or black as "brown"

at least from what i've seen, this country is predominantly white and black in the political and social sense. brown people really don't have a presence since we weren't a major part of the history

thats why i kind of like my college and city... It kind of puts me off into a "better world" even if it's just for some hours. I get to see stuff like a group of East Asian men and black women, for example, just hanging out together or see the white kids protesting for blacks on campus. It just reassures and reminds me that not everybody is trash. But I know it's all gonna end when I enter the corporate world n whatnot.

It's like that all over. The divide between Black and Brown is political in Trinidad, and has even gotten violent in the past. In the UK Afro-Caribbean/Asian seem to coexist but whenever you enter a corner shop you get followed around :dead:

The only thing that irritates me is that the brown people directly benefit from the fight of blacks here in America but they always want us to shut up a bit. They look down on the cause but smile from ear to ear when benefiting.

The only reason these Latinos, Middle Eastern, and Asian mofo's get any sort of fair treatment is because of the movements black people lead. They are ungrateful IMO. They seem to always think they are in line w/ the whites until niggas like Trump give their asses reality checks.

The native Americans didn't align and you see how they stuffed their brown asses on reservations.

I don't consider East Asians white-washed tbh...

To me they are the only big racial group not severely affected by white supremacy and Westernization.

I spent 6 weeks in India last year. Some of the worse weeks of my life. I'd be on a PACKED subway car and people would be scooting so as not to have to touch me. I'd go into shops and the visible hostility on the faces of some of these people let me know I wasn't welcome there. It was tough. On the other end of the spectrum you had random people coming up to take pics of/with you. That made me feel like a zoo animal a bit. A curiousity.

It's the same thing in the Caribbean context. Here in Guyana, Indo-Guyanese have dominated the economic realities of the country and still see themselves as superior to Afro-Guyanese. Couple that with ethnocentric political parties and we have a civil unrest waiting to happen. We mirror Trinidad is this regard and that's because we have an almost identical ethnic make up. The Indians need to get their shit together...

Yeah reminds me of my friend Vanessa, I asked her to go to a black lives matter protest with me and she said why she's not black

We giggled and went to Starbucks

But the next day she was fuming because I guess Trump made a speech about wanting to deport her grandparents when he's in office

My best friend went to china and he said the same thing. People were circling him taking pictures, asking to take pics with him, and just being "amazed".
