What do you think really makes an artist legendary?
Name some artists who you think are legendary, why?
Who is/will be a "modern" legend?

Donna - she OWNED the disco era and she's an underrated singer.
Minnie - she's credited for the use of her whistle register
Cher - iconic fashions, reinventing herself, etc
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On, Sexual Healing need I say more almost every R&B male singer cites him as an influence
Chaka Khan - Sweet Thing, Tell Me Something Good, I Feel for You, I'm Every Woman. Timeless iconic songs and music.
Sales and trophy a don't make a legend.
Legend is opinion anyway. It's someone who is famous for doing something really well, even more if they've inspired someone/something. But someone may think Lumidee songs amazingly and someone else will disagree. I guess there are undeniables like MJ and Madonna tho.
Long lasting cultural impact makes you a legend. That's it. It's how you are remembered.

Pretty much!
And it's not just stats or things of that nature it's really about what legacy you leave behind...
Some people/things could have been a flop during their lifetime and become legendary because of their catalogue being rediscovered or constantly references. And vice versa.

Pretty much this and having timeless records. The likes of Elvis, Madonna, Bob Marley, MJ, etc. are consistently brought up and emulated today. They're brands even after life. Those are legends. A lot of the names mentioned in here are just artists who had a nice run tbh. They're not legendary. Stats and awards don't make a legend. They were a moment in time. Broke a record, cute but no one's trying to be like them in 2016. Bob Marley died without winning big awards yet he's remembered and quoted like he's still. Same with 2Pac and Biggie.
Like you can have a big record that was sampled 5000 times and NOT be a legend. I think artists like Marvin Gaye and Isley Brothers are legendary because they had more than big records. They created a feeling in millions of people that is felt even today when listening to them. A lot of the names mentioned in here can't say that.
i think Bey is already a legend tho IMO

!!!!!!!!!! IMO, longevity can play a factor but its not necessarily a requirement. Some legends made that kind of impact in a very short amount of time.
I mean
QuoteAfter seven months of semi-public back-and-forth, a conversation instigated in part by Aussie piracy and Beyonce's surprise release in December of 2013 has resulted in the global recording industry accepting Friday as the release date for new albums. As reported in August, the shift will take place this summer.
Fridays should have always been the TEA tho.
That's when most people get paid (if you don't get paid via semi-monthly), and/or spend money.

I definitely think it's subjective to some degree but the fact that there's undeniable legends makes the term more tangible and less opinion based.
I think being a legend is a combination of a few themes mentioned: Longevity, cultural impact, commercial success, influence, artistic uniqueness, and how revered you are by fans & peers.

You know what.... Que is kinda right. An icon is more so someone who has achieved major success and set trends in a particular MOMENT in time, but a legend is more so someone who has done all of those things PLUS influenced a whole generation AND has stood the test of time.

pretty much
I don't even think longevity (lasting 20-30 years) is even necessary for that either lol
Lots of Hits
Classics
A fairly large catalog
Talent in some area or field or at least creativity
Ability to visually or sonically transform & still remain relevant
Critical acclaim
Longevity (like at least 10 yrs)
Classic Albers
Iconic moments
Referenced extensively
Etc
Tina turner
MJ
Aretha
For this era I think Beyonc?, Kanye, Adele will be legends...
