Congratulations on the release of your new album " Cognacs and Conversation". You put 11 years between this album and the first one, which is considered as a classic. How do you feel with its release ? and tell us more about this album.
I feel very blessed for the release of Cognac & Conversation. I am grateful for the fans of my music that believed in me and continued to support me (mixtapes, live shows, etc...) over the passed 11 years.
The album is a vibe. It's meant for you to be able to press play and enjoy every song until the last one. Like a journey. Nothing is meant to jump out at you... more so accompany your current mood. Rick Ross features on two songs... the title track "Cognac & Conversation" and "All I Ever Wanted" Anthony Hamilton features on "That One" and an amazing female lyricist from my hometown New Orleans 3DNatee features on "Only You"
What has changed between the recordings of the first and this album? The state of mind was completely different?
A lot has evolved since the last album. I am 11 years wiser. My outlook on life and love has grown. My perspective is based in the same moral ground but my approach to life and love has evolved and I am far more secure in who I am as a woman.
The one is the leading and very good first single, which actually features Anthony Hamilton. What was it like to work with him?
Anthony Hamilton was a complete pleasure to work with. He has been so supportive. He is soooo talented I had no fear. I knew our chemistry would be awesome!!
Rick Ross is featured on 2 songs, All I ever wanted & Cognac and Conversations. The album is actually named after the latter one. The 2 songs have received praise and left people hanging with the following question: Why didn't you sign with Maybach Music like you were supposed to?
Me signing to MMG was a discussion we had and that was the plan but things started moving fast and Wale took off... Meek Mills took off, the compilation Self Made, albums started to take off and that wasn't our focus anymore. We became more of allies. He supports me and is a great mentor. He signed on to executive produce the project with me and lended his ear and talent and that was definitely a blessing.
Skin Diver is actually one of my favorite of the entire album because it's powerful yet sensual as the same time. Do you think you will release it as a single?
I would love to release "Skin Diver " as a asingle. It is actually a single from Boddhi Satva's album Transitions due out next month.
You wrote the biggest hit of Christina Millian's career (Dip it Low) but also of Trina's. You're actually behind some of the coolest songs of MJB. What is it like to write for others artists nd do you still wanna do it?
Writing for other artists is a kool thing. It's nice to see other renditions of your thoughts and feelings and financially it's always nice to write for a bigger artist. I am not seeking to write songs for others as I am currently focusing on making sure people get a chance to know who I am as an artist but if someone seeks me out I will definitely lend my pen.
Are there any other artists you'd like to work with?
I would love to work with Pharrell, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae... many... I'm a fan of good music and great creators.
Is it hard to be an artist signed on an independent label?
Its, not hard being an indie artist it's all I know. It's like when people ask is it hard being a mother to twins... Well, it's all I know. There are financial challenges... far less promo if any but I get to create what I truly feel in my heart without questions so the trade off balances out.
Do you think comebacks such as Janet 's with her "No Sleep" can change some things?
I think more than come backs... the current state of society will create the change in music. People need something nurturing to the soul. Good, well prepared food becomes in demand when all you are being fed is fast food and microwaved meals.
What are your thoughts on the actual rnb industry?
R&B is thriving. I love a lot of the progressive r&b like Jhene Aiko and The Internet. I think that people are becoming more appreciative of traditional r&b again as well.
Are you planning to come over here in Paris for a concert ? Fans are waiting for you here !! they are dying to ear ? be your girl ? live.
I will be in Paris in early 2016! End of January!!!
Are u already thinking of your next album? do you think we'll have to wait 11 years too?
I have a very clear vision for the next album. It is called LUVR.BLVR.DREAMR.THINKER
I will never make my love ones wait 11 years for an official album from me again.
