Title: More of our women embracing their natural tresses....
Post by: Herb. on September 11, 2015, 07:30:23 AM
I cannot express how happy it makes me when I see so many of our women at my job rocking their natural hair. It used to be such a rarity; but now I'd confidently guess that approximately 40 percent of the women I see now are natural.

This week, one of my direct colleagues came into work without her wig on - completely natural, no relaxer, just styling product. She walked in so nervously, looking at everyone around her, as if she were surveying their bodily reactions to her new look. Of course I made sure to let her know that she looked BEAUTIFUL.

And I meant that. Her natural hair complimented her skin and features so much more than that blond bob she'd been rocking since she's been there. But of course, once I talked to her she told me all of the "feedback" she'd been getting from other people, which clearly contradicted my own. Comments such as, "What are you going to do with it?"; "You should cut the back of your head.", etc.

As I listened to her, I was disappointed but not surprised. It's no secret that our own women cannot walk out of their houses with their OWN HAIR without being subject to comments which clearly exhibit SELF HATRED from our own people. I was sad because I knew that as she was telling me this, even though I tried reiterating the fact that she looked so beautiful, and that these people hate themselves, and are simply putting their hate onto her because she clearly LOVES herself, I knew that it may have been falling on deaf ears. She sounded so embarrassed. I just knew that blond wig would be perched on her head the next day, all in an effort simply to hush the noise around her which obviously made her uncomfortable and possibly insecure.

However, I was thrown for a loop the next day. I expected to see the reintroduction of the blond wig, but this bitch walked in with her natural tresses still PERCHED and sitting fucking pretty. I wanted to fucking jump and say YES BITCH!!!!!! sdssd Now THAT is a strong, confident black woman who LOVES herself and will not allow outside noise to pollute her space. And she's been rocking her natural ever since. I fucking LIVE! (http://imgwiz.com/images/2015/09/08/qAmhd.gif)

!!!!
I see a few guys at my job embracing their natural mess, including myself of course. I think many times people negate or challenge the idea that embracing our natural texture is a statement. "Oh! Not a big deal! Just hair! Why does everything have to be about black power!"

But in reality it does send a statement; a very positive one which lets everyone know that we are proud of who we are, and that just as other races can enjoy the "freedom" of simply wearing their hair as it grows out of their head, with only styling added to the process, so can we.

I know this sounds weird but I love seeing men with kinkier textures proudly sporting their afros. It kinda turns me on for some reason. And no, they're not doing it because they can't afford a haircut -- these men are nicely groomed, stunningly handsome and are often dressed way more impressively and professionally than their melanin challenged counterparts...they just love their hair. And who's booking?

You're a MAN and just because you're growing your hair doesn't all of a sudden make you a got damn expert of what women are doing.
Stay in your place and in your gender, sir.

Although Jayden brought up an excellent point regarding the unisexual embracement of our hair, I focused on our women because we should all know that they have it the HARDEST when it comes to anything beauty-related. From all fronts -- internally (Shaquanna asking when they're getting a fresh perm) and externally (Brad ducking for cover assuming that they're Foxy Brown back with vengeance.)

I've found that the less I do to my hair, the more it likes me.  :plzstop: Now all I do is wet my hair, apply my conditioner, take my fingers thru it once to gently detangle, flip my head over, scrunch some gel in, and it's so happy with that.  :plzstop: :plzstop: 5 minutes to style. so simple i do it every day before work. its called a wash n go.

If you haven't done so already find some v-loggers on youtube, etc. who have your type of hair, you may be surprised with what you find. it took tons of trial and error for me.
