What do you guys think? Is it wrong to wear these tribal prints..Even when you are black? :omgwatshappening:
Yh
I'm tired of these fools making Kent? bras and snapbacks :uhh:
QuoteYou take a cultural dress, mark or trait, with all its religious and historical connotations, dilute it, and bring it out for occasions when you want to look ?trendy?.
Say it bitch
These insta kente thot dresses look stewpid
sdddddddddddddddddddd
its always a kii to see these shitty dashiki fits in flea markets
QuoteI?m not trying to start a war, but I would just like you all to realize the hypocrisy of seeing someone wearing a Fulani septum ring, rocking a djellaba, painted with Yoruba-like tribal marks, all the while claiming that this is meant to be respectful. It?s a hodgepodge, a juxtaposition, a right mess of regional, ethnic and cultural customs and it screams ignorance and cultural insensitivity.
Bitch
My sisters boyfriends sister wears a fulani nose just because SHE wears one
And they're ITALIAN :hmph:
I hope it gets caught on something
I really like some of those African inspired shirts ive seen. Probably gonna get one LOLZ
You can't be serious :dead:

So now it's an issue when Black people embrace their roots too?
I like it. Better than giving Euro mess a legacy
I used to appropriate black American inner city culture eventhough I don't live the same struggle.

I think its cool to honor our heritage but its a different story when u start playing dress up.
UNless you've done extensive research and know exactly what you're wearing stands for. And even still........it's about respect for culture.
i would never walk around like im str8 from africa or an indian reservation somewhere. at the end of the day we have our own culture and upbringing to be proud of.
but its always good to see ppl taking pride in Africa. i can see why some could be offended though.
Clearly those are comtemporary clothes with an traditional twist and not some religious garbs. I don't mind it cause like this the legacy continues to the next generation. As long as we know where it is from, it is cool in my book.
i think the author is upset because its a trend thats probably gonna crossover to white people sporting the mess :dead:
they made a point about how H&M already sells some mess and soon enough it'll be a full african mess owt in there
I dont see the issue though, but yeah I can see how one is offended
Cause I know disgusted when I see those kpop chinks dress like 2000's Hiphop artist.

I would be fine with it if all the comanies that produce that mess are actual black people.

xcxccccccc
also true. if that were the case id want the world to embrace it
:melmel:
This sounds dumb to me
let ppl wear stuff how they want. As long as they aren't burning it
or anything like that, just be glad ppl are embracing the culture of their ancestors
I think it is unfair to accuse black Americans of cultural appropriation. They are in a unique situation and it is not their fault. Is it cultural appropriation if whites do a St. Patrick's Day mess out or perch in Paris fashions.
The power paradigm is a different one. African Americans do not stand to benefit differently from Africans and do not escape stigma, because they basically look the same. And black Americans do not systemically oppress Africans.
I'm sorry I just :kii: :kii: :kii: :kii: :kii: :kii: :kii: :kii: :kii: :kii: :kii: :kii:

This is such bullshit, she need to get a life!
I have a closet full of African clothes, made for me in Africa by the sister of my close friend because she is a seamtress in Cameroon, her mother was seamtress, they have been doing this for years and years. She did not lecture me on the history of the clothes, explain the orgin, the tribal marks etc, but she did want to give a part of their culture to me and I looked good in it. I went to an African wedding once and heard later that some of the people made comments about me wearing a traditional African outfit. Well where else am I going to wear this? :dead: The people in African loved to see me in the same outfit, sent me back with so much clothes, even for my sisters and nephews. Africans in America are a very judgemental group of people, and are very judgemental of African Americans, even though most have spent their entires lives wanting to be us, wanting to be a black person living in America, the irony.
People need to shut the fuck up. Better to wear than to not be worn at all. As long as they pay homage, let them be trendy.
Sone good points in here

I was almost with you until this part.
This just voided whatever point you were trying to make.
Don't see anything with being proud of your roots
they can get over it.
fck u
hope that wasn't to me
don't wanna have tuh lash you zank'

I mean, the only reason I have ambivalent feelings about this is because some people may not be trying to be trendy. They may genuinely be trying to support their African roots in a way that is more practical.
Otherwise, valid points. Ultimately people have to respect others cultures. If someone belonging to a culture postulates that others are appropriating or dishonoring said culture, I can't debate that.

who cares. let ppl dress the way they want. never understood why it was such a big deal.

well they do hate yall mixed selves

I feel like it's a surface level thing.
Alot people only embrace their "roots" superficially. They'll see some generalized East African mess and wear it to embrace their roots, but won't look into it to understand where this particular garment came from or the fact that it's East African which means it's technically not them embracing their roots.
I think people don't like it because it's another way to homogenize Africa, even if seemingly positive.
hey bbys
luv Africa and Africans
that mess was just in retaliation
Africans are so annoying
