Title: Soulquarius Brings All-Star R&B Acts, Production Flaws to Santa Ana, CA
Post by: Lazarus on February 19, 2017, 09:29:52 PM

How do you assemble one of the greatest R&B lineups in contemporary history and still manage to taint it with grave production flaws? That was the conundrum at the promising Soulquarius Festival that took place on Saturday (Feb. 18) at the Observatory Grounds in Santa Ana, California.

Touted as an "R&B Jam," on paper, Soulquarius was a middle school dream come true. The lineup was staggering -- R. Kelly, Erykah Badu, Brandy, Monica, DMX, Ja Rule & Ashanti, Mya, to name a few -- and it promised to be a nostalgia trip for the contemporary set, one that had never been treated to such an assortment of musicians, particularly the ones who soundtracked their lives as far back as the early '90s. Many of the artists performing across the four stages at Soulquarius had already reached their mainstream peak, but being able to enjoy them now, all in one place, seemed too good to be true.

And it was. The singers and rappers who took the stage throughout the overcast day were largely excellent, proving this was a festival that could have taken place 20 years ago and felt just as vibrant and musically potent. But it was the festival production itself that distracted from the purpose and execution of the event. Throughout the day, fans flooded the event's Facebook page and Twitter with the hashtag #Soulquarius to share their experiences of having to wait for three hours in the general admission line despite having shown up when doors opened at 11 a.m., or to complain about how staff were unknowledgeable about logistics and the fact that the entire festival was running two hours behind.

Upon arriving, attendees who parked in a satellite lot were held on a bus and greeted with a lecture from one organizer about how their car would be towed if they hadn't left by 1 a.m. It inevitably backfired, leaving a decidedly meager crowd for the event's closer R. Kelly, who took the stage around midnight. (He was originally scheduled for 10 p.m.)

The layout itself -- coupled with what felt like an oversell of tickets to many posting complaints to social media -- was one of the biggest faults. The main stage, situated outdoors, sat catty-corner to the outdoor house stage, connected by a thin strip with merch booths on either side. Between sets -- and often during -- fans trying to buy custom t-shirts and tote bags collided with a swarm of festivalgoers trying to squirm their way to the other stage. It felt like a festival with the ambition of Coachella, but with one-thirtieth of the size.

Inside the Observatory, where there were two stages, it felt more like a club setting, providing a reprieve from the swelling mass of people at the outdoor stages. But even then, it had its issues. At the last minute, Brandy was moved from the outdoor house stage to the Observatory stage without warning and fans who figured it out weren't let inside for a half-hour as Baby Bash, who brought out Frankie J to perform "Suga Suga" and "Obsession (No Es Amor)," wrapped his set. By the time Brandy took the stage at 11:30 p.m. to perform one of the most impassioned appearances of the day, running through "Afrodisiac" and "Sittin' Up in My Room" with two male backup dancers, even the staff appeared to have had enough, as one bartender at the upstairs bar was too intoxicated to serve. Many who had come to see Brandy didn't even know she was performing and didn't find out until afterwards. And while she did perform, outside, an enormous line had formed for the after party where up-and-comer 6lack would appear, a confounding move considering that it was a separate ticketed event chosen to take place at a festival that was still going on.

To say that the music didn't matter is to denigrate the event as a whole. And, despite the poor technical issues, the artists delivered. Kelis was one of the day's best, clad in a shimmering purple body suit and reviving old hits like "Get Along With You," "Millionaire" and "Milkshake," the latter of which was mashed with the beat from Wu-Tang Clan's "Gravel Pit." Monica swept through her discography ("Sideline Ho," "So Gone," "Angel of Mine") while over on the opposite outdoor stage The Pharcyde shouted out J Dilla on "She Said" and "Runnin." Too $hort played an early set ("You know you're in Orange County when Too $hort goes on at 5:30," quipped one attendee) and DMX followed, growling through "Party Up," "What's My Name" and "X Gon' Give It to Ya" before ending with a signature prayer.

Newer talent like The Internet and BJ the Chicago Kid appealed to the surprisingly robust younger demographic at Soulquarius -- the former treated the crowd to "Girl" and "Under Control," while Earl Sweatshirt watched from backstage, the latter covering Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" and his Grammy-nominated "Turnin' Me Up." Ameriie forgot some of the lyrics to her songs, but the passion was fierce and present for "1 Thing" and "I Just Died." Ja Rule and Ashanti did a duel set, all of their classics in tow and Badu stretched her tunes ("On & On," "The Healer") like psychedelic putty, each taking on a different tone or musical tint as she serenaded the teeming audience.

But it was hard to fully enjoy it all. For a first-time festival, it felt difficult to give Soulquarius organizers the benefit of the doubt. Many of the problems could have easily been foreseen -- a bigger venue could have been selected to accommodate such a large crowd and some artists with full backing bands could have done a sound check prior to the event instead of on stage in front of impatient audiences as the schedule lapsed into severe tardiness. The idea for the festival was there and it's impressive that they managed to get all of the artists to the same place, but that isn't enough when ticket costs sat well past $200 for some. If Soulquarius gets revived next year, it will have a lot of mistakes to correct.

Omg this start to finish dragging nnn

R&B people need to get their shit right. Hip Hop, Pop, Reggae and Rock festivals seem to run much smoother.

I don't think it's fair to compare an R&B/soul mess owt to a pop/rock tea
clearly the budgeting is going to be different. a lot different.
i'm sure human error must be taken into account as well but it's also about resources

Budget shouldn't have anything to do with being organized
all they had to do was keep things on schedule
I know it was raining but they should've watched the weather forecast and had tents and umbrellas ready for everyone

It will probably be better next year hopefully. this isn't a good start for something that could be a great and very needed festival for r&b artists and lovers.

Sounds like the main issue is that the organizers weren't prepared for such a major audience turn out.

Quote
Despite a winning lineup, Soulquarius proves not worth the headaches

Soulquarius had the type of buzz inaugural festivals could only hope for.

The stacked lineup was an ambitious tracing of the last quarter century of R&B, and the daylong Saturday festival at the Observatory grounds in Santa Ana had long been sold out.

New jack swing and R&B representing the genre?s ?90s golden age, as well as neo-soul, hip-hop soul and current alternative explorations of all of the above were on the bill. No surprise there, as most modern festivals are a sample platter of genres, but Soulquarius? strength was its devotion to a generation of influential acts long ignored from major festival bookings ? Brandy, Monica, Mya, Ameriie, Jon B and Ashanti.

If graded solely on its musical offerings, Soulquarius hit a number of high marks. But a festival today needs more than just a willing lineup.

As a festival space, the Observatory has had a checkered past, as noted by the logistical hiccups of last year?s Beach Goth. Many of the same issues returned for Soulquarius.

On-site parking, general and VIP, was depleted a few hours after gates opened, forcing ticket holders to trek four miles to the O.C. Fairgrounds and shuttle to the site or else find street parking. Those shuttling were sternly warned that their cars would be towed if concertgoers were late in returning.

The line to get in was startling, snarling for blocks, with some festivalgoers complaining that wait times topped four hours.

That meant that catching the day?s early acts ? an imaginative showing by Willow Smith and nostalgic throwbacks from Jon B and Nina Sky ? was next to impossible.

Navigating the layout proved to be exhausting, with a dangerous bottleneck between a smaller stage near the festival?s entrance and the main thoroughfare to the other stages (placing the merch tables in the middle of the path felt like a cruel joke, as lines of fans slowed the path to a crawl).

?We were packed together like sardines, with everybody pushing and shoving to get through. I saw one girl having what looked like a panic attack and crying,? said Ben Chodos, 27, of Westchester.

?Event staff was nowhere to be found at any point during this.?

Complaints continued throughout the day.

?I quickly regretted my decision to come to this show after three hours of being in line,? said 28-year-old Roger Salgado of Santa Ana. ?I managed to see three [acts] and not for lack of trying ? I feel ... ripped off, bamboozled.?

Taking in the offerings at the Observatory and its smaller Constellation Room stage felt unsafe, given that the indoor venues? capacity ?  listed at 1,000 and 350, respectively ? maxed out multiple times. Overall attendance figures were unavailable, and organizers had yet to respond to requests for comments as of press time Sunday.

Set times for the main stage were at least two hours behind schedule, and performances on the side stages also ran late. Organizers were savvy enough to have a wonderfully constructed mobile app, but they failed to update the consistently changing set times.

The disorganization  was enough that fans took to social media to demand refunds of the Observatory-presented event, understandable given that general admission tickets were $115 (more for VIP).

It?s a shame, as promoters nailed a dream lineup for R&B fans.

There were sparkling sets from headliner Erykah Badu and Kelis, whose  funky,  forward-thinking interpretations of R&B foreshadowed the current alternative movement in the genre. Young artists such as Jhen? Aiko and the Internet, who  were also on Saturday?s bill, connected the dots between the past and present.

Monica relied almost solely on her hit ballads from the early ?90s, which made for plenty of slow grinding under the dreary sky, and the Dream again showed why he?s such an R&B auteur with sinewy, hook-driven jams that were plucked from R. Kelly?s lusty playbook.

BJ the Chicago Kid?s searing set of romantic grooves and Ameriie?s underrated offerings of spirited R&B were perfectly programmed inside the Observatory, while Ja Rule & Ashanti?s bouncy set of R&B/hip-hop nostalgia brought much needed energy to the main stage.

Sadly, hundreds of fans spent the final hours of the festival stuck outside the Observatory doors after an eleventh hour switch of one of the night?s biggest draws, Brandy, who saw her time shifted repeatedly ahead of what became an incredibly hard-to-get-into closing set.

The holdup? Organizers actually booked a separate ticketed show for buzzy singer 6LACK inside the venue. It was promoted as the after-party to the festival, which was fine in theory, but Soulquarius was far from over.

Imagine trying to get into a venue to see an act and having to circumvent a line of non-festivalgoers 1,000 deep. It was chaos, and security guards struggled to keep the 6LACK ticket holders out while letting festivalgoers in.

?I appreciate you guys waiting for me,? Brandy said gratefully during a set that competed with R. Kelly?s closing show on the main stage.

Then it was off to hope your car hadn?t been towed.

From LA Times' Gerrick D. Kennedy, kinda knew he would write negatively about the whole experience

Upon arriving, attendees who parked in a satellite lot were held on a bus and greeted with a lecture from one organizer about how their car would be towed if they hadn't left by 1 a.m. It inevitably backfired, leaving a decidedly meager crowd for the event's closer R. I just spoke with a guy over at Interscope (Mya's old label) and said sis had the most impressive set of the night.

Who?  :uhh:

I mean I read people's Twitter and they were impressed and for them she was the highlight of night.

QuoteShout out to @myaplanet9 for being a true vision of excellence. She was the highlight of my day, performance wise. She & The Dream had two of the best sets at #soulquarius.

#Mya embraces the fact that she's a legacy act, without fighting for "relevance" in such a way that she actually feels more relevant than most acts who performed.

She let her career highlights be a foundation for the new material she has out. & tied it all together with incredible lighting, transitions & energy. I'm seriously still impressed. She needs another moment. She deserves.

TBH in order for Bran to revamp her show, she needs to work with a production set director... she needs a LED screen, with all the extra shit going on and she needs to throw in songs like UDKM, TAOL, Broken-hearted, Nothing, etc. and cut the Whitney Tribute.... so much she can do but she needs to get Frank Gatson out her ear and someone who understands her discography/artistry

all they had to do was keep things on schedule

And didn't i hear that these tkts were expensive AF! Like gtfoh, aint no excuse for this mess to have been this unorganized

You are so on point with that. It would take her show to next level. There are plenty of independent artists that don't have great budgets and still have great sets. No excuses for Brandy. Her artistry is top notch but the stage needs work. Also, the constant black ensembles need to go. Brighten up that wardrobe!

It's so refreshing to read this about Brandy's performance! Read the caption. She was LIVING for Brandy!

niggers! r&b!
Its the first time they did it
were you guys expecting awireless festival excellence?
I don't think the organisers knew the turn out would be THAT big
Next year will be better, they need to get some media coverage too, make it a bigger affair, get live streams, blog coverage, sponsors ect
For something that was only promoted on IG, they did really well and the artists all brought their A game.

Brandy really needs to add "U Don't Know Me" to her set. I mean, these mofos don't know you, Bran! That clip on instagram got me so hype for it. She would kill it!

I was expecting some hiccups in its first year. There are some events that occur regularly that still have these problems, regardless of genre/crowd size. I'm looking forward to more events like this in the future with similar lineups.

Only normal for things to takeaway / learn from on the first year
