The death of R&B singer and actress Aaliyah had a deep effect on The Voice coach Alicia Keys, resulting in a song that fills her heart each time a contestant sings it on the NBC show.
Keys says that song -- "If I Ain't Got You," which was No. 1 for six weeks on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart back in 2004 -- is one of her "favorite songs ever" and tells the story behind it in an exclusive clip for Billboard.
"A lot of people have sung it on the show, which I super, super love," she says. "I actually wrote it after I heard that Aaliyah passed away. I was on a plane, and I think being on the plane and knowing she passed away after a plane crash, it was this sentiment of being present in a moment and nothing else mattering but those that you love."
Keys explains that she wrote the song "really quickly" but the production took forever. "It was such a labor of love," she says.

I don't quite buy it... Aaliyah died August 25, 2001. The Diary of Alicia Keys was released December 1, 2003 and If I Ain't Got You was released as a single on February 17, 2004... If the song was Aaliyah inspired (and I've read somewhere it was September 11th inspired as well... which was also in 2001) why would she wait so long to release the song and not make it the first single (she released You Don't Know My Name as lead single.) She said the song was written pretty quickly... it doesn't take years to produce the song.

Very true. Every song an artist records doesn't necessarily end up on that specific album. Like when Mary recorded No More Drama for the Mary album but held it back for her next album. Things like that happen all the time.
