Today, one of my coworkers noticed another one had a mark/scar on his eyelid. (Which I've noticed for a while, but I guess she happened to looking at him more closely today.) She asked, "What happened? Did someone beat you up?" out of concern. He then disclosed to us that he has Lupus, and it messes with his skin.
You could see the look on her face.....she wasn't ready for that. I was shocked. I told him that one of my favorite singers in the world battles with it, so I'm pretty educated on the condition. To let him know that I understand. And of course I have had people close to me who dealt with life threatening, immune system attacking diseases. So on a certain level I did empathize, but I didn't get into all of that. There is such a thing as over-empathizing.
But this just goes to show that you NEVER know what someone is going through.
