Producer and songwriter Kevin Kadish, one of the first speakers, zeroed in on financial challenges songwriters face with music streaming services.
"I've never heard a songwriter complain about radio royalties as much as streaming royalties," Kadish said. "That was the real issue for us, like 1 million streams equals $90. For a song like 'All About That Bass,' that I wrote, which had 178 million streams. I mean $5,679? That's my share. That's as big a song as a songwriter can have in their career and No. 1 in 78 countries. But you're making $5,600. How do you feed your family?"
Five Republicans, including four members of the Judiciary Committee, were on hand for the listening tour. They were Rep. Darrell Issa, R-California; Rep. Blake Farenthold, R-Texas; and Rep. Doug Collins, R-Georgia. Brentwood Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn was also in attendance.

Wow
Just 5K?
Um, there's people who make more than 5K in just a month, loves.
:uhh:
Hold on, wait. Just 5K from 178 million views?

178 million streams would count every stream from every platform in the world
Spotify, Rhapsody, etc.
Wait.... I had to return again...
5K?

It's disgusting, honestly.
They should be better compensated for their credit/work.
I can't imagine coming home with 5k.
That's a fucking mess
Then what the hell are the writers making from videos that are at 50 million or 25 million?
The fuck.
But he probably made near a mill just from the sales.

That's the thing, streaming and "just sales" are no longer separate.
They are one in the same...
Streaming is a big part of the game now.
Even Itunes had no choice but to make the shift to a new format in order to remain competitive.
And this song and writer were at the
top of the totem pole; this story simply gives insight to what those who aren't nearly as lucky are bringing home.
sales are declining
and streams are increasing
revenue from any aspect is vital
and to know that the biggest song could only generated 5k in total (not in a week, not for a month, not every 3 months) is troubling to me
furthermore... it says ALL ABOUT THAT BASS sold 11 million copies worldwide
based upon the songwriter's rate, taxes paid, co-writing set-up... he would be lucky to walk away with 200k from digital sales.
which is modest and something to value, of course.
but to put things in perspective... the most you could generate from 11 million sold with the songwriter's rate is $990,000. That amount would have to split accordingly to the credits.
11 million sold still doesn't get you past 1 million in revenue to the songwriter.
Not every song sells that much.
So imagine what the other writers are getting with songs that sell 1-5 million copies and are co-writers.
We're looking at 15-50k if they're likely. Less than most individual's salaries.
Well since Spotify has free streaming and Tidal & Apple Music have free trials
I'm not surprised. There's no way to make money from streams
but I'm sure the residuals from radio & sales are HUGE
and then on top of that radio is biased. so it's really up to the girls to go buy shit in the end.
Is this the same kadish from the human era?

the people behind these streaming sites should be ashamed of themselves.
The industry is a mess.
