Quote"I can't afford Underground," Winfrey told a group of eight journalists. "It cost twice as much to make as Queen Sugar. As a matter of fact, my dear friend John Legend called me personally and asked me about it, but we'd already been talking about how we could make it work [...] it's like $5 million an episode, so we can't afford it. It's not cheap, I think because it's a period piece."
Winfrey added that on top of the price, though the show was often trending on Twitter, it just didn't have the ratings to justify the expense, especially considering that OWN is still a young and growing network.
"We really tried to make it work," she says. "I wanted to make it work because I think it's a good show. I wanted to be able to save that show, but it did not make good business sense for me."
Bummer. Here's hoping Underground might still be able to find a good home.

But ch, I'm surprised WGN was able to do it in the first damn place if that's the case. Maybe the FX network that shows American horror story and mess
They can continue to be EDGY
Was it really that good of a show ? Is or worth checking out ?
god damn thats expensive
I don't see how WGN afforded it.Season 2 cost $50M and averaged only half a million viewers per episode.

Honestly it would have done really well ratings wise if it were on FOX or something, clearly
To even average that many viewers on freaking WGN, is a feat on its own :dead:

I understand Oprah. At the end of the day she has a business to run, and it is expensive. But I so liked this show.
I would never have even started to watch it, because I was tired of seeing slavery movies/shows. But my fav actress Jurnee Smolett was the lead character, so I checked it out. And it was really good. It was more fast pace and adventurous than you would expect a show like that to be.
Everybody shaded John Legend as Fredrick Douglas. :-P But I feel like people weren't realizing that Fredrick Douglas was mixed, so having someone light skinned play him isn't too bad, even though John Legend doesn't really look like the pictures of him. He's an executive producer, and he wanted to get in the show, too, I guess.
well if ORPAH cant dew it
get queen latifah and will smith to fund it lol
Maybe an online service like Netflix could pick it up.
Or possibly Blip.tv

it was one of the best shows on tv tbh
Oh wow those period pieces are expensive as hell. I mean Netflix is just giving away coin they should try to move it there but then again the first season was the best season so..
