'I Wanted Out': Michelle Williams Reveals She Was Suicidal at Height of Destiny's Child Fame
Artists candidly discussing their struggles with mental illness isn't as common enough as it should be. Former Destiny's Child member Michelle Williams wants to change and "normalize" that.
Williams was a guest co-host on The Talk on Wednesday (Oct. 18) and took the opportunity to open up about her struggles with depression and thoughts of suicide at the peak of Destiny Child's success in the early 2000s.
At the time, she didn't think she was suffering from depression because she couldn't identify the signs as symptoms, and instead believed they were "growing pains." It wasn't until she reached her 30s, she said, when she looked back and realized what she was suffering from and how long it had affected her for -- according to her, she began feeling depressed when she was young teen.
When she disclosed to the group's manager -- Beyonc?'s father Mathew Knowles -- that she was thought she was depressed, he told her, "You all just signed a multi-million dollar deal. You?re about to go on tour. What do you have to be depressed about?" Williams continued to deal with her depression, but it only worsened -- to the point that she was suicidal and wanted to leave the group.
So sad. Much love to Michelle. Money and fame doesn't make you happy.
As much as I want to drag Matt for what he said to Michelle, that's a common ideology alot of black people have.

Doesn't mean we pacify it or that its right. It must be clinically and practically addressed.

Love this woman.
Love that she didn?t backtrack either
I saw the interview and Matthew is disgusting
n
Glad she?s Beys fave out of the group now tho lolz genuine self
I can understand it was quite difficult from doing back up with Monica here and there to the full fledged hectic DC schedule including the performing aspect which we know wasn?t natural for her.
But at the end of the day many ppl are depressed working their 9-5 or even 2 jobs just to make the rent. She was def in a privileged position.
Matthew is a monster but I won?t throw him to the wolves here. We black people have a stigma about depression. We don?t talk about it, acknowledge it and rarely seek treatment for it. 2 a diddy or a Benny or a Troy would?ve told her the exact same thing.
Glad she?s in a happy space now. Being an artist on the level dc was on ain?t for everybody. Look what happened to Britney I E.

But if it already started in her teens, it could be a deeper rooted depression (maybe genetical). Doesn't matter if you're in a girl group or work at some office. It's still a depression.
I thought she also had an eating disorder
She is good at making gospel music, give the people some hope Michelle
n
She definitely didn?t have to mention Matthew. She could have did the whole ?Someone at my label said...?

I?m just saying that traveling the world in a different country everyday with a hefty work schedule and being away from your family surely doesn?t help. Not to mention all the reporters that were being nasty to them. And then everybody telling you how lucky you are when the celeb life at the height is far from glamorous. Them (the public)
Never letting her live down that fall on bet etc.
bey and Kelly were groomed to do this and had ?their? family right there with them.

I don't necessarily think Matthew was wrong for saying what he said but he should have sought out help for her after..
Damn
Michelle said on Twitter she never wanted to quit the group. Does anyone have the actual video of her on the talk?

Mental and sexual health has always been taboo topics in black communities around the world.
Damn shame.

Now that I think about it, he probably didn't know if she was completely serious. Michelle was not as vocal back then and I'm pretty sure she didn't say it with certainty or a way that he felt was alarming..
