Title: Problematic: Teacher Misspells Word Creating a Racial Slur
Post by: Freemala Harris on January 25, 2018, 11:03:26 AM
On Monday, her teacher sent home a spelling list with the class that contained a racial slur.

The word was supposed to read, ?Bigger.? But the word on the spelling list for Rosa's class, began with the letter "N," not the letter "B."

Day?s daughter didn?t know what to think.

"My daughter said to me, she said, 'I know that word and I know what that word means, but is this supposed to be on my paper?'" Day said.

Day went to the school in Sanford to speak with the teacher.

"I said, 'Well, you didn't spell-check your word? You didn't proofread your word before you sent that out?' And (the teacher) said, 'It is a word.' And I didn't like the attitude behind that one,'" Day said.

Here's how the teacher explained the mistake to school administrators: She pointed to the keyboard on her computer and said the "B" and the "N" are right next to each other, and she accidentally typed the "N" instead of the "B."

The teacher was probably in defense mode....which is why she didn't really send off a feeling of remorse...
her job was literally on the line for a typo :plzstop:

she needs to be disciplined. even if it was an honest mistake, you're still an educator who isn't proofreading their own work before sending it to the class.
you're teaching kids how to be on top of things but you aren't yourself. suspend her with no pay :woohoo:

The letters are right beside each other... it was an honest mistake. The teacher saying ?it is a word? merely point to the question of proofreading. Being that it is a word, spellcheck would not have caught the error. Some people just overreact sometimes. I know it?s the state of our culture, but it?s sad that an honest mistake gets to this point. And as far as the teacher appearing apologetic, that is her perception. The teacher corrected the error but doesn?t have to beg for forgiveness.

It would be one thing if this list went out to the black students only... the same list was distributed to ALL of the students.

I don?t think she should be disciplined or suspended.

I agree that the teacher didn't have to be on her knees crying for forgiveness. She was probably being defensive more than anything.. I know I'd be if I made a mistake and had people coming at me. I'm sure the mother didn't approach her with a smile and warm embrace. sfnfsnnsfnn :plzstop:

But at the same time, the teacher deserves to get checked. You're an educator. Proofread your fucking work before you send it to your children in the class.

I don't even send an email to someone at work without fully reviewing what I've written once or twice before I send. She has the responsibility of teaching kids and needs to brush up on her attention to detail. When she typed out the worksheet she had an opportunity to review it, and when she PRINTED up multiple copies, she had the opportunity to fully review it. Clearly neither one of the opportunities were taken.

She needs to get written up for sloppy teaching at the very least. Kinda lazy.

I do.

At the very least , write her up and make her aware that mistakes like that cannot happen again. Instruct her to take the extra step to proofread her work and stop being lazy. Keep those eyes on the detail.

That is TOTALLY fair and reasonable.

I'm sure they're documenting this all and tucking it right into her file. At the end of the day school districts will want to cover their own ass in some way.

A write up or record of conversation... I agree to that. But suspension without pay is a bit irrational.

Yeah I just threw the suspension mess in as a creative option. :woohoo:

But I agree. Write her up to the edge of her career and move on.

They need to toss her.

How are you a spelling/grammar teacher and can't even proofread?

I literally went to the keypad but before that I had to go back to my old typing lessons...

"A s d f...space...j k l ;...space...a s d f...space..."

Turns out she's right but still...never hurts to double or triple check. Given the current social climate, it's not worth losing your job over a typo.
