The same can be said for Beyonce.

Outside of the major categories, the Grammys are more about popularity than actual artistry nowadays,
especially the R&B and Hip Hop categories.

The Grammys have always been wishy washy and have always been a mesh of popularity/artistry. There's no difference between then and now. Regarding Bey she hasn't won a handful of awards during one ceremony since 2008 (6 years ago), so your "nowadays" statement doesn't add up.

especially in the 90s when most of those names were popular & putting out music
