Country legend Shania Twain got caught up in controversy earlier this week when she said in an interview with The Guardian that had she been a United States citizen (Twain is Canadian) who was able to vote in 2016, she would have voted for Donald Trump.
Now, Karamo Brown, the culture expert from Netflix?s Queer Eye, said that he thinks the community should forgive Shania for what she said. ?As a community we are very forgiving,? he said in a Facebook Live interview with entertainment journalist Marc Malkin. ?It?s in our nature, because we have been treated so bad by our family and friends who didn?t accept us as we go on our journeys.?
Brown pointed out that as a Canadian, despite what she says she would have done, Twain was unable to actually vote for Trump. ?Let?s be honest, that one vote ? many of our friends and family members made that vote,? he said. ?That one vote does not define her as a woman.?
Twain has offered an apology on her social media, saying that the comments she made had been taken out of context, and that she's "passionately against discrimination of any kind."
Still, fans quickly took to Twitter to criticize and shame the singer for what they viewed as an intolerant point of view, saying that as a figure that is looked up to in the LGBTQ community, she has a responsibility to stand up for them. Many disavowed the singer, saying that they would not continue to support her due to her point of view.
